Dear Fiona

The next Sikh Lobby Day is planned for Tuesday 1 July. Committee Room 9 has been booked by the APPG for UK Sikhs from 12 noon until 2pm. The two issues to be covered in the lobby are:

- Recognition and monitoring of Sikhs as a distinct category by all public bodies to ensure Sikhs are equally treated as regards employment, appropriate representation and are provided a fair share of public services

- Need for a nationwide Government code of practice regarding the Sikh articles of faith to ensure wider understanding and awareness to prevent any unnecessary restrictions and discrimination in the post 9/11 era

Some of those invited to attend are:

- Dominic Grieve MP, the newly appointed Shadow Home Secretary (and Vice Chair of the APPG for UK Sikhs) who fully supports the Sikhs right to be separately monitored

- Boris Johnson, Mayor for London – the GLA is already monitoring Sikhs separately. The original invitation was to Ken Livingstone when we met him in February.

- Anna Fairclough, Liberty lawyer, who is taking forward the legal challenge in the Kara case in a South Wales school – the evidence has just been presented in the High Court in London between 17-19 June

- Paramjit Dhanda, Minister currently responsible for the Code of Practice for Sikh articles of faith, first suggested in parliamentary debate in March 2005, but has still not been introduced.

- Simon Hughes MP, President Liberal Democrats and Vice-Chair APPG for UK Sikhs

It would be great if you could also take part. We are expecting a delegation of around 15 -20 from Slough.
