MARSEILLE: President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday made it clear that Sikhs could not hope to be above the rules in France.

He was replying to a question on the controversy over Sikh students being prohibited from wearing turban to educational institutions.

Mr. Sarkozy was unambiguous and firm: “The Sikhs were most welcome; but we have rules, rules of secularism” which were applicable to all “on the territory of France.”

In this insistence on uniform application of rules, “there was no discrimination.”

The French President also made it clear that the Sikh issue could not be compared with the anti-Christian violence in India.

No wonder every country hates France, all Sikhs should boycott this arogant nation run by idiots,it was okay for oiur people to die for the Freedom of France but now we can't follow our religion in France.All Sikhs should not buy French products(made in France),don;t go there for holidays boycott them fools.Sikhs there have been fighting for rights for ages - this has to be taken before the United Nations Human Rights Council ,until then France will continue to deny the right to a turban for Sikhs

MARSEILLES: Insisting that France is not discriminating against Sikhs wearing turbans, President Nicholas Sarkozy on Monday said that he expects t

he community to respect the customs and traditions of the French people. ( Watch )

"We respect their traditions and customs and I hope they also respect France's rules," Sarkozy said in a joint interaction with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who also belongs to the Sikh community, after the India-EU summit.

"We respect Sikhs, their customs, their traditions. They are most welcome to France. But we have rules concerning the neutrality of the civil servants, rules concerning secularism and these rules don't apply to just Sikhs, they apply to the Muslims, they apply to all on the territory of the French Republic." Sarkozy said.

France in 2004 had imposed a ban under which Sikh students were prohibited from wearing turbans to schools, a decision that has incurred world-wide protests from the community.

Sikhs had won the same case but not in france, here in belgium!

these summer vacations we won it... but the school challenged it again in summer.. lol

so no sikh student has gone to school with turban since 2-4 years... (4 years ago, belgium followed france and also banned rumal/patka/turban in schools)

but we will win the case in 2-4 months again...

but i'm very sure its allmost INPOSSIBLE that france will allow sikhs to wear turban...
