Vancouver, Canada (KP) -- In an email sent by the British Columbia Sikh Youth, the Sikh Sangat of Surrey was urged to cast their vote in the upcoming Surrey Gurdwara elections that are taking place on November 23rd. According to the correspondence received by Panthic Weekly, the Surrey Gurdwara has not shown any concern in organizing gurmat oriented programs in almost ten years.

Panthic minded individuals and families are sometimes prone to show a lack of interest in politics at Gurdwaras where gurmat maryada is absent--however, this is a good chance to once again revive gurmat at this Gurdwara as a new slate has just announced that they will run in the elections. As alleged by the BC Sikh Youth, the sevadars of the "Panthic Slate" are committed to seva and will work hard for the Sikh community of BC and for the wider Panthic cause.

"For over 10 years, (it) has been under the dictatorial control of one Balwant Gill...and his cronies and most them do not keep their kesh, as mandated by basic Sikh principles, and regularly drink alcohol"

For over 10 years, "Guru Nanak Sikh Temple" has been under the dictatorial control of one Balwant Gill. Balwant Gill and his cronies hang onto control for no other reason but for the sake of control itself. Neither he, nor his lackies, are baptized Sikhs and most them, including Balwant Gill himself, do not keep their kesh, as mandated by basic Sikh principles, and regularly drink alcohol. There has not been a single amrit sinchaar at "Guru Nanak Sikh Temple" in the past decade, not a single youth gurmat camp or anything else that the community in Surrey seriously needs.

The elections will take place on November 23rd at the Surrey Gurdwara Sahib. All residents of Surrey are eligible to register to vote. Registration must be done this weekend and any person aged eighteen or over can register. Please note that there is a small registration fee that all voters must pay in order to establish their membership.

Sikh principles require a ten percent dasvand (tithing) and the fee for membership could come from these savings. However, the Panthic slate has also offered to pay the membership fee for those who cannot afford it.

Details of the registration:

Time: Saturday, October 11 from 12 PM to 6 PM and

Sunday, October 12 from 11 PM to 5 PM.

Location: Surrey Gurdwara (Guru Nanak Gurdwara) on Scott Road/120th Street

Identification and registeration required. For further information, email seva@bcsikhs.com
