Anyone Visited These Places In Punjab

i know about the first place (Sher singhs residence). It is located inside a christian college in Batala Gurdaspur. The building is in very bad condition. The land is on lease to the Christian college, it is the same college where Mr. Mc-leod taught for some time. All christian missionaries in punjab visit this college once. The building belongs to Punjab Govt. and is on lease to christian college management. In front of the building there is a very prominent church about 100 years old. The college adminstration uses Sher Singh's palace as main office. They paint and renovate the church every year but don't do anything for the palace building. They say it is the property of govt. therefore the responisibility is on the govt. not us. This building has been greatly modified for office use and is falling down and according to my prediction will vanish after 100 years.

Any idea when the lease of this building expires? I am sure its probably more than 50 years since the college took the building.

The Sher Singh palace is in a pretty poor state and is difficult (if not impossible) to gain access to. As a previous commentator on this site just said, it is a victim of Punjabi officialdom and the bureaucracy seems to be paralysed with inaction becuase that is easier to do nothing than actually saving this building. You will know that there are precious few (if any) buildings from the period of Ranjit Singh that are left intact within East Punjab. These two stories illustrate the history and the importance of this building:

The second building is the Qila Mubarak in Patiala. I visited this last in 2002 so it has been some years, but the building is truly one of the most important fortress palaces of the entire sub-continent. It also happens to be architecturally one of the very few truly Sikh buildings left in existance. MOst other truly Sikh forts have been destroyed pretty systematically over the years. It had been undergoing quite serious and very well funded restoration whilst Amrinder Singh was CM (not a huge surprise) but this stopped when the politics changed. I am not sure just how accessible it is now- perhaps someone else can let us all know. I have been inside the fortress a number of times and each time I have had to either lie, bribe or sneak my way in or use some personal connection to gain access.

It's a scandalous situation where Punjabis are not given access to the most remarkable pieces of our heritage and we have to bribe or use political muscle to get into these places.

I hope this helps.

I think the lease has already expired and the college was to be or should have been re-named as Maharaja Sher Singh College, as per lease agreement. But it didn't happen due to vote bank politics as Batala has more reserve population then general and most are christians. Also i am not so sure about this lease and re-naming story as i heard this from someone long time back.

I am comming from Batal (next to batala a pind), and there were a lot of old palaces like that. But they are all broken and in a very bad situation. Nobdy is taking care of them.

Next time I am there, i will visit this place. I never knew that this is Maharaja Sher Singhs castel. There is also a Place of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

We should keep them. Because Punjab and the history of Punjab is very old and interesting for tourists. But mostly we duno our history...

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
