A youth forcibly occupied the “holy peehra” (small cot), meant for the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, in the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple in the wee hours today.

The incident occurred at 3 am. The youth, identified as Rajeev Kumar (21), a kesadhari, was seriously injured following thrashing by SGPC’s task force, radical Sikhs and sangat following the incident. Kirtan was in progress at that time before the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, which is taken from Akal Takht to the Golden Temple at 5 am every morning.

Though the SGPC has ordered an inquiry to be conducted by its secretary Dilmegh Singh to know whether there was a conspiracy behind the incident, the police has registered a criminal case against him. Deputy Commissioner Bhagwant Singh and SSP Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh reached the Golden Temple immediately on getting the news.

This is for the first time that such an incident has occurred, amounting to the violation of age-old maryada (Sikh code of conduct). According to eyewitnesses, the youth jumped the brass railing and occupied the “peehra”. He was, however, overpowered by the sangat and taken to room number 52 in the SGPC complex.

Manager of the Golden Temple Harbhajan Singh said the youth said he was “ordained by Guru Nanak Dev” to occupy the “peehra”.

Meanwhile, the SSP office said the youth had been arrested in connection with the violation of maryada. Rajeev is son of Rattan Chand (an employee of the BSNL) and resident of Goalbagh, Amritsar. He was given first aid and later on shifted to a local hospital.

Was the person mentally ill? The vast majority of people with a mental illness are more vulnerable than they are dangerous. I would be more weary of a person in a suit and tie (i am amongst them at times) than a mentally ill person.

At the same time, in very very rare cases of mental illness, like very rare cases of sane people....people proceed to kill other human beings, so actions such as this could be part of a mental illness. I don't think Guruji would be so fickle as to reply with an immediate thrashing regardless of the circumstances. Sikhs should have the same patience.

True ...

patience? what - wait for him to pick up guru gobind's weapons and declare himself king of the khalsa? he should have got a heard beating. that'll teach him to think twice when 'guru nanak' tells him to do something stupid.

Maryada Violation

SGPC chief apologises to sangat

Varinder Walia

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, April 28

After getting report of Maryada violation (Sikh code of conduct), by a youth who occupied ‘Guru’s Peehra’, meant for Guru Granth Sahib in the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple on April 26 morning, SGPC chief Avtar Singh suspended two employees for dereliction of duty.

After the ‘Bhog ceremony’ of his elder sister, the SGPC chief met senior officials and Sikh clergy, here, on measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents. He, however, tendered unconditional apology to the Sikh Sangat for the incident. He asked the police to complete probe at the earliest to unearth conspiracy, if any.

Rajeev Kumar (21) was handed over to the police when agitating Task Force of the Shiromani Committee, Sikh Sangat and certain radical Sikhs had assaulted the youth who occupied ‘Guru’s Peehra’. He was rushed to the private hospital in serious condition. A criminal case was registered against the culprit in Police Station Kotwali Amritsar under section 295A of the Indian Penal Code.

Jaspal Singh , member of media committee, Shiromani Akali Dal ( Panch Pardhani) held the SGPC responsible for the incident. He alleged the SGPC president was more interested in election campaign of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal than maintaining of the Sikh Maryada in the holiest Sikh shrine.
