Operation Blue Star 25 Years on.

BBC Asian Network Remembers Amritsar

BBC Asian Network airs a documentary on Monday commemorating one of the most tumultuous events in recent Indian history.

June 4th is the 25th anniversary of Operation Blue Star when hundreds of people were killed in a gun battle between the Indian government and suspected Sikh Militants inside one of India’s holiest shrines, The Golden Temple.

In June 1984, The Golden Temple complex was bustling with people as it was the anniversary of the death of Sikh's 5th Guru, Arjan Dev Ji. After a three day siege the Indian Army attacked the temple in an attempt to flush out Sikh preacher Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale, and his followers, who were armed and had based themselves in the temple. The Sikh community across the World condemned the attacks which ultimately led many to some Sikh's calling for their own separate homeland - Khalistan.

Four months later in October 1984 Indian Prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards as revenge. This in turn led to mass killings of Sikhs in Delhi. The city became a battle field and rife with riots, where official figures say 3000 Sikhs were killed but human rights groups put the death toll much higher.

The documentary named ‘Blue Star 25 years' finds out what the impact of Operation Blue Star has had on Sikhs in the UK today. It talks to Harpal, a child in 1984, who was living in Delhi when a group of hundreds of men surrounded his home the day after Indira Gandhi's killing. At nine years old he recalls how his older brother was beaten to death, Sikh men were being hunted across Delhi. Harpal escaped as his mother had dressed him up as a girl. Harpal, his mother and 5 brothers and sisters were homeless for days until they were taken to an Army camp. There they survived on bread and milk with hundreds of other families facing similar circumstances.

British born Amardeep speaks of her father’s secret that resulted in years of unanswered questions until one day she brought a 'Never forget 84' t-shirt home. His anger and fury towards it were the first indication for her of how destructive the invasion had been for him. Her father had come to England to teach music and after two months in the UK, received a telephone call that destroyed his world as he knew it - his mother, wife, and two children had been burned alive in their home in Delhi.

Chandan, born in 1984 explains how the attack was the wake up call for her parents who actively became involved in Sikhism. It was the trigger that led to her father becoming a baptised Sikh and pursuing the political campaign to obtain a separate Sikh state - Khalistan. Now at 25, Chandan supports a Khalistan state and says the attack on the Golden Temple has shaped her values and identity as a Sikh.

Head of programming at BBC Asian Network Husain Husaini said “Operation Blue Star had a huge impact on not only Sikhs, but Indians all over the world. In this documentary, The BBC Asian Network goes deep into the community to hear about how this event affected their lives even today”.

The documentary will be aired on The BBC Asian Network on Monday 1st June at 6pm.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
