SECOND SIKH LORD MAYOR IS SWORN IN

More News | Back to home page

11:32 - 21 May 2004

Leicester's 546th Lord Mayor was sworn in wearing a ceremonial black turban last night.

Labour councillor Piara Clair became Leicester's second Sikh Lord Mayor during the annual mayor-making ceremony at Leicester town hall.

Coun Clair was due to become deputy Lord Mayor, but was catapulted into the top job after Lord Mayor-elect Councillor Jean Middleton stood down this week due to illness.

In his acceptance speech, Coun Clair said he was wearing a black turban to honour his father. He will name his mayoral charity appeal next week, but hoped part of it would fund a hospital in Punjab.

Coun Mary Draycott will be Coun Clair's deputy. Both represent Coleman ward in Leicester East. Outgoing Lord Mayor Councillor Ramnik Kavia is the new High Bailiff.

Coun Kavia revealed that he had raised around £70,000 for the Star appeal to combat diabetes.

In earlier editions, we incorrectly stated that Coun Clair was the first Sikh Lord Mayor of Leicester.

Leicester's first Sikh Lord Mayor was Councillor Culdipp Bhatti. We apologise for the mistake.
