She’s one the few people of our community working in main stream media who has covered an emotive subject, and most people just slate here.

The programme over all wasn’t even biased. Had a gorea or some one else covered it could have been a total disaster.

1984 can’t be covered in one hour so lay of her.

People have said she was more concerned about hair etc, she made two comments.

1. She worried about what Singhs would say (fair enough not an environment shes ever been in before)

2. She said she doesn’t know if she’s ready to stop cutting her hair (at least she’s honest and didn’t pretend be something’s she is not.

She’s not a strong Sikh but this could be the start of her journey who knows.

with the abuse and comments she’s had peopel will drive her away from Sikhi.

I wonder if she feels she may have been stitched up, somewhat.

Possibly.....

I know abit about media production making of programmes, docs news ect.

Though the programmes was only an hour, the actually filming could have been anything up to 40 hours plus and even more these are called “RUSHES”

Out of say 40 hours of filming and research its the EDITOR and Procedure who decide what will be used in the one hour broadcast. Sonia may have played a part in what the choose to show ... then again she may not.

Who knows what they have chosen not to show. She layed in brar a fair bit , and Im sure theres was some questions bbc have chosen not to show with brar.

The interview with brar could have been an hour long but they can only show some bits as the programme is for an hour, and I’m sure BBC didn’t go to some secret location for a 3min interview!!!!

She is the only journalist that has tried to put the Sikh side of 1984 on mainstream UK TV(However weakly) , nobody else has done that in 25 years. The good things to come out of this are that even people who showed no interest in 1984 are now asking questions about what happened. Sonia did say that she identified with the Sikh religion which is a big step for her, maybe she can be helped to take things forward. Remember a lot parents tell their kids nothing about Sikhism, so they have to be helped, this why we have a lot of issues in the Punjab and West regarding Sikhi in the youth. The people behind the scenes the BBC used are the real offenders.

The 'Sikh' journalists like Khushwant Singh usually blame the Sikhs for everything , even though he had to hide in the Swedish embassy when his fellow Indians tried to burn him alive. We had a few Punjabi communist journalists who made the offensive Radio 4 programme. The only person who did a good job on TV was the late Patwant Singh.

Here is the BBC Press Release for the programme.

BBC Programme about 1984 - A Sikh Story

NSO PRESS RELEASE BBC PROGRAMME 1984

A one hour documentary on the massacre of Sikh in 1984 will be shown on BBC1 at 10.50 PM Sunday 10 January 2010. The Programme is called 'A Sikh Story'.

The setting takes the form of a young woman of Sikh origin who has lapsed from active practice of her faith going back to India to rediscover her roots and the importance of her faith. In the process she comes face to face with the full horror of the persecution and massacre of Sikhs.

Dr Indarjit Singh, Director NSO who was the Adviser to the Programme comments:

'After years of chasing and lobbying, we finally got the BBC to make a programme although it is not the sharp investigative programme that I would have preferred. Numerous difficulties were encountered with the Indian government stalling for weeks before giving limited permission for filming, even though we said that it would only be about someone rediscovering their Indian roots. There was also some personal frustration that in my interview, my role of 'independent' adviser limited the degree of outrage that I was allowed to express.

The BBC were also nervous about the project and the interview with General Brar is not sufficiently robust. All in all however the programme is sensitive and moving in its depiction of the horrors suffered by Sikhs in 1984.1 urge Sikhs, particularly young Sikhs to watch it to understand how minorities can be treated in a country that describes itself as the world's greatest democracy.'

Please inform your local gurdwara about the date and time-10.50 PM Sunday 10 January 2010 on BBC 1.

There was the programme the BBC made in the 90s, a two parter....that had both Patwant and Khushwant Singh.

Tommorow (18 January,2010)one of the Punjabi newspaper in Punjab is going to have this story on it's front page.

Sonia Deol (alias Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu)story is a typical one of a UK /USA/Canada/AUS based Sikh girl but we can not remain quite any longer .Some harsh methods have to be adopted so that the young Sikhs particularly girls are not misguided further regarding our struggle in which 2 lakh Sikhs were killed and unimaginable difficulty was faced by us in Punjab .

The process of alienating oneself from Sikh roots starts with changing your name ,removing Singh or Kaur from your name and then changing your name to Christian or Muslim sounding names.Come to Punjab ,pick up any English newspaper then turn to some obituary or bhog section, you'll be surprised to find Christian or Muslim sounding names amongst the children and grand children. Not only this you fill Hindu names amongst the in laws .This trend is assuming an alarming situation in Punjab .Parents are to be blamed for this.

In those days(1980/90s) also social reform movement had to be started by All India Sikh Students Federation to bring Sikh girls/boys to their senses. If we still have the attitude of "chalta hai" or "it doesn't concern me" then we are heading for a disaster .

"Jay saadaa aahi ravaiyaa reha taan kujh saalaan vich hindutva day khaaray samundar vich gerk ho jaavaangay..."

Translation:" If we continue to keep this attitude then Sikhism will drown in the sour sea of Hindutva in a few years.."
