Statement by Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff on the petition before Parliament concerning events in India of November 1984

Ottawa - Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement today on a petition to be presented to Parliament concerning the events in India which occurred after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in November 1984.

“There is a petition that will be presented in Parliament this month which characterizes the three-day eruption of violence in the wake of the assassination of Indira Gandhi as ‘an organized campaign of genocide’ against those of the Sikh faith.

“The circumstances of 1984 were undoubtedly tragic; many innocent people died violently in a highly-charged atmosphere of religious tensions, but describing these events as genocide is not accurate or appropriate, particularly in view of genuine contemporary instances such as Rwanda.

“It is used here to provoke a charged, visceral response which will not bring Canadians closer to mutual understanding and closure in regard to these tragic events.

“The Liberal Party of Canada will always support any initiative which promotes justice for human rights abuses throughout the world, as it seeks peaceful resolutions to long-standing, violent conflicts. “It will never stand with those who seek to polarize communities, or aggravate the tensions around long-standing conflicts that divided us in other lands.

“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our parliamentary caucus, let me affirm that we will never support any initiative which seeks to tear the threads of mutual respect and common citizenship we share as Canadians.”

A) I think we should get everyone we can to sign this petition because a petition with only a 100 signatures wont do any good.

B) I think its about time Sikhs taught the liberal party a lesson in the next election. Their every move has been anti Sikh lately even though Sikhs overwhelmingly vote for them every time. No support during Kamal Naths Visit, The spreading of lies by Liberal MPs during the BC Nagar Kirtan, and now this should equal to no support from the Sikhs.

C) Andrew Kania has been the only Liberal to support Sikhs and we as a community should support him in every way and make this a successful event in Parliament. Even if we fail to get it as a genocide recognized in Parliament, we should be there in great numbers to raise awareness and draw media attention to the issue.

D) I am ashamed of all these so called Sikh Mps in parliament doing absolutely nothing for us. Malhi, Bains, Dhalla, etc have done nothing just sit down and bend over to progress their careers
