Anaakh - Is a sort of self respecting mentality that is not averse to righting wrongs and fighting against oppression, injustice. An unsuppressable spirit.

Sardar / Sardari - Sardar is an old word indicating a chieftain, Sikhs came known as sardars during their rise in the misl period when they became de facto leaders of various regions. Sardari refers to the act of leading, the art of leading if you will. So if someone is doing a rubbish job at being a leader, we can say "what sort of sardari do you call this?"

In the UK, Pakistanis commonly used to refer to Sikhs as sardars, but in a mocking, insulting way.

Khand - Translates as the English 'Realm'. In Japji Sahib there are a number of khands described through which one ascends in order to reach Rabh, this final stage of emergence is referred to as Sachkhand or the 'realm of truth'. It can also mean sugar in Panjabi.

Thanks for that, I had that knowledge already, I should have been a bit more specific. What are the origins of the word khand and what does it have to do with khanday batay da amrit shakna. I was talking to my chacha ji about this, and he told me he asked one of his nieces who gave a very detailed explanation about the meaning of khand, like you said, but also included that when you take amrit from amrit bata you symbolically kill yourself in this life. How does that relate to khand?

There are about 12 dialects of Punjabi (general noticed in speech such as Pothohari, Pahari and Saraiki , Malwai and the standard Lahore-Amritsar dialect etc)

The word “Khand” has disparate meanings ( as mentioned by dalsingh101) such as ‘realm’, ‘refined sugar’, ‘abandoned space’ etc.

However, in Japji Sahib it means ‘realm’ . That word seems to have origin from the word ‘Kand /kendh/kenth’ of Turkish/Persian languages meaning ‘abode.’ or ‘region’. For example, in the names of ancient cities Summarkand and Tashkand (Sammarkent, Tashkent).

Ii think you are possibly mixing two words up here. Khand is realm as described earlier - khanda is another word altogether which refers to a particular type of sword, a straight sword with two sharp edges. This is an old word.

Here is an image of a typical Indian khanda.

I think khanday batay da amrit shakna is called such because it involves stirring the water with a khanda sword which is representative of many things such as strength, bravery and the annihilation of ones former self into a new form.

If you're looking for the historical meaning for the word 'sardar' than you can get alot of pointers from watching the news regularly these days, from reports from Afghanistan. Often, the news channels talk aboiut the 'Kandahar Sardars' etc. From that, you get a good idea of the origin of the word.

In the Pathan culture....and somewhat persian culture....the term 'sardar' is given as respect to a military or political leader. My thinking is that when us Sikhs rose as a power and fought these pathans we were basically saying to them "hey.....each and every one of us is a sardar"

Anyway, if you're looking for translations...as with many Sikh terms the origins lie in Persian. So...'sar' = Head....'dar' = holder. Thus 'the person that holds the position as the head' ...i.e the head person.
