AKAL TAKHT Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti is toying with the idea of imposing a ban on the use of sub-castes with names among Sikhs, it is learnt.

Sources told Hindustan Times that Jathedar Vedanti was convinced that the practice of using sub-caste with names was contrary to the teachings of Sikhism. A formal request by Shubh Karman Tei Kabhoon Naa Taroon Mission in this regard prompted the Jathedar to think on these lines.

Through a formal communiqué, the Mission had recently urged Jathedar Vedanti to issue a directive banning the practice of using sub-castes by Sikhs. Taking a cue from the Sikh principles – Manas Ki Jaat Sabhe Eeike Hi Pehchanvo – the Mission had expressed concern that by using sub-castes, certain Sikhs tried to give the impression that they were superior to others.

The Mission felt that though Sikhism opposed the caste system, many Sikhs used Gotras or sub-castes with their names to distinguish themselves from the others. “A Sikh is a Sikh whether a Khatri, Jat or a Dalit. A male Sikh should suffix Singh and a female should suffix Kaur with his or her name,†the Mission felt.

Mission chief Ravinder Singh said at a time when Sikhs were preparing to celebrate the 400th installation ceremony of Guru Granth Sahib, it was necessary to end caste-based disparity as preached by the Sikh Gurus and enshrined in the holy Granth.

What worries the clergy more is the fact that a large section of people, especially from the upper castes, had discontinued the use of Singh or Kaur with their names.

This glaring fact came to the fore when several students had to issue the change-of-name notices in newspapers to add Singh or Kaur with the

ir names to avail the minority quota reservation in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee-run Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical and Dental Sciences here.

Sat Sri Akal:

It is true. He does sign hukamnamas only as Joginder Singh, but really, there needs to be an edict that states that he has disowned the title "Vedanti". The title of the story itself leaves a person with a feeling of hypocrisy, only affirmed further by stating that only Singh and Kaur should be the last names of a Sikhs.

i heard a while back that the jathedar has the name vedanti because it's somehow linked to how much studying of the vedas or other writings he's done....

it's like someone having a PhD beside their name
