Anyone on the forum who works from home - what type of careers can one pursue to work from home?

thanks in advance

It depends - Has your employer given you the option to work from Home all 5 days?

OR

You want to run a business from home?

Generally, the option is given to IT people with offices far away from their home or global MNCs with no offices in the country, but requiring resources with specialised skills which the employer can be flexible to let them WFH all 5 days.

IT is a good area which allows the flexibility of working from home. For the past two years I worked from home (4 days from home, 1 day in the office). It is good to begin with but in the long run its not good. You miss the human contact and get a bit lazy too. However, working from home does give you a lot of flexibility. I was free to goto the gym classes that I wanted to go to, go to town etc.

I am no longer working from home simply because office enviornment teaches you things which are not always possible working from home. When I am in the office now and have technical discussions with colleagues, I learn a lot more compared to being at home and doing the same things I have always done.

Agreed - Same with me. I was WFH for 4 days a week for past 3 years till 4 months ago, but now usually 5 days a week from past 4 months; when the company adviced they had to tax all people travelling to Office every Tuesday (on the petrol amount claimed for travelling from Home to Office) as that may be seen as a regular pattern to second office by HMRC, and claiming money for visit to second office will be seen as a benefit, hence a P11D for the same.

Since then the company's Finance team adviced not to follow a regular pattern (i.e. NO every Tuesday to visit the office, but follow a staggered visit pattern). However, the Technical learning and discussion with colleagues is a genuine issue I face as well, along with general office discussions and am going to start looking for a new employer in 2012 :). I am quite fed up working from home for the past 3+ years :D.
