Sikh History By Max A. Mcauliffe One Of The First English Writings

Recommended Posts

Please read these 6 volumes on one of the first few decent English writings on Sikh history this has been researched by katha, gurbani, suraj prakash and several writings and is probably one of the best encyclopaedias in Sikh history written which at times is has some inaccuracies we do need to re-write some of these as well. We still need to translate the entire suraj prakash into english for future references.

Please distribute we still need to update some of our websites aswell and forums from these books please take the time to read them through. Perhaps more commentaries can be written after reading these 6 books. The same author also did a lot of the hard work in translating the sikhitothemax we have so also reading these can help us to build from his very fine and hard work.

One of the inaccuracies would be how adamantly Mcauliffe supports the fact that Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurb is in April not in Katak(October/November). He like to compare the fact that as Christians misplaced Jesus"s birthday to december 25 so did the Sikhs.

Otherwise it addresses both sides of all other conterversies. I was surprised that even back then there was a difference in what people thought Sachkhand was. Some thought it was like Nirvana, a state of the mind/soul others thought is was a place.

I learnt a lot from McAuliffe's books when I began to dig into Sikh theological history a few years back.

For anyone who wants to learn more than the basics - and in English - these books are great. Although like Not2Cool2Argue mentions there are a couple of issues McAuliffe mentions which are contrary to widespread Sikh belief, and therefore, like most others issues of this nature, you will need to find other sources and then decide for yourself.
