I have problems sitting and doing my 5 baaniya.

I tryyyy, but can never get past half way through Jaap Sahib...I want to do all my nitnem but I duno what happens I just can't focus after an hour and still having half of jaap sahib, tavprasad savaiye chaupai sahib and anand sahib to do....I have a very very short attention span.

Any ideas about how I can overcome this :( i feel sooooo terrible

As said by singh1234567 don't eat before you do your nitem as it is actually hukham. Basically by doing nitem and then eating your feeding your soul by doing your nitem 1st and then feeding your body by physically eating breakfast etc after. (That's how I taught myself and got into the routine of doing paat before I have breakfast at first and it did the trick lol).

I'd also suggest you push yourself to complete nitem because just like how at amrithsanchar we are blessed with amrith same way every morning when we do our nitem we are feeding our soul with amrith (if iv said this slightly wrong someone please feel free to correct me).

Another thing is try to wake up early, the earlier you wake up the more likely you are to be able to focus.

Best of luck :)

Firstly, I just wanna say well done. Its excellent to read that your making the effort to read your banis, and that even your finding completing them tough, your making a conscious effort! So well done with that! =)

Well if your finding it hard to focus, try working out what's causing this. It could be something as simple as getting enough sleep so that when you wake up and do your nitnem, that your mind is alert!

If it helps, try taking it in stages. Try to read Sri Japji Sahib every morning for a week. Then try reading Sri Japji Sahib & Sri Jaap Sahib next week and etc. Eventually you'll have worked up to your 5 bania without a problem =)

You said that you have a short attention span! If your mind does start to wander, try not thinking about anything else, but reading the bani. Take in the words, the sounds they make, try thinking about who wrote the bani if it helps.

Just think, the Nihang Singhs in Panjab have bear bania as part of their Nitnem, some Singhs and Singhnia actually have Nitnems which are so long, that their entire waking day is spent reciting bani! Imagine being in their shoes(!)

Finally, if all else fails, go the Gurudwara and do an Ardaas in front of Maharaj, asking for help and they will do Kirpa and help you on your journey. Have faith in Maharaj and have faith in yourself.

Keep making the effort, and no matter what, don't give up! Everything your doing is making all the difference to your Jeevan

understand the meanings of bani, when you understand the meanings you can focus more, and if you focus more and actually understand what your doing and saying it doesnt seem like a chor and is very beautiful as you will start approciating bani, and also, just stick to it, i think the reason you cant get past jaap is because your feeling overwelmed, but if you gradually build up to it, it will become easier, do japji and jaap for around a month and add a bani every month, by the end of the 4th month you will be able to do all of it to anand sahib :)

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
