8It was good to see so many British MP's pledge support for Sikh human rights on camera in the link below. The Kesri Lehar are presenting a 118,000 petition to Downing St and then meeting at Westminister Parliament on the 10th December

Kesri Lehar need to recognise the difference between opposition to the death penalty (this is opposed by the UK Govt, all EU Member States and at the last vote in the UN by 110 States) and taking up other human rights issues with India.

Some MPs will therefore find it easy to condemn the Death Penalty in India, but will be reluctant to criticise India regarding other human right abuses. Listen carefully to what some of them have said.

Also the Kesri Lehar petition was initially about Balwant Singh, then expanded to the death penalty, then expanded to human rights abuses against minorities in India etc. Since the petition was started a number of specific human rights abuses have taken place in India - we could list some relating to Sikhs, but Kesri Lehar should document those that have taken place against other minorities in India to link back to the petition.

It has been a fantastic effort to collect a petition of 118,000. But over 100,000 was probably achieved 6 months ago in June - so we should ask why have Kesri Lehar delayed handing in the petition until December (while human rights violations have been continuing and India has now put someone to death by hanging) and pushing for a debate (so close to the Christmas break, as opposed towards the start of teh Parliamentary session).

I disagree. I think Kesri Lehar have actually been very clever. They know people can't board a train unless they're provided with a platform. Once you have them aboard the train you have a captive audience. Some on that train may have got on for different reasons..i.e in order to reach different destinations, but having them on the train is far better than plodding along the tracks with an empty train.
