Two days after Supreme Court rejected the mercy plea of KLF militant Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, the Punjab government on Sunday wrote to the Centre seeking 45 companies of paramilitary forces.

This came a day after the SAD core committee decided that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy, Sukhbir Singh Badal, will soon meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and President Pranab Mukherjee to seek mercy for Bhullar.

"We have written to the Centre for 45 companies of paramilitary forces and they are sympathetic to our demand. This has been sought as a precautionary measure because we don't want any disturbance in Punjab. We want to main peace and communal harmony," Home Secretary D S Bains said.

When asked where would the forces be deployed, Bains said: "The DGP is looking into it. We are hopeful of getting extra cover of paramilitary forces soon."

In Bhullar's native village, Dialpura Bhaike in Bathinda, extra police force has already been deployed from different parts of Punjab. Security has also been beefed up because of the annual Baisakhi Mela at Takht Damdama Sahib, which concluded on Sunday.

Bathinda Zone IG Nirmal Singh Dhillon, meanwhile, said: "We will retain some of the police personnel in the district as a precautionary measure and the rest will be released by tomorrow. The situation is under control as of now."
