Mystery shrouds the burning of eight Birs of Guru Granth Sahib, placed at a Gurudwara in village Multania, in the wee hours today. According to sources, the Birs were kept in a room on the first floor of the Gurudwara. The Granthi (priest) of the gurudwara witnessed smoke coming from the room at around 3 am today. He immediately shouted for help which was responded to by the villagers. An announcement was also made from the Gurudwara loudspeaker. However, it took minutes to douse the flames. The sarpanch of the village, Major Singh, said that it was the first such incident in the Gurudwara. He added that Balwant Singh Nandgarh, Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, Talw…

CHANDIGARH: The Sikhs have finally adopted the ‘‘Nanakshahi Calendar'' as the Punjabis in general and the Sikhs in particular observed the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev on Monday by organising langar and chhabeels throughout the state. According to the government calender, the martyrdom day was on June 4 and the state government had declared it a holiday. Because of initial confusion, people who had already made preparations observed it on June 4 but the scale of participation of people clearly indicated that now onwards people would celebrate Sikh festivals including ‘‘Gurpurabs'' according to the Nanakshahi Calendar. The Nanakshahi Calendar has already been adopted …

http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story.ph...ontent_id=27599 Besides being morally wrong, events like Babri Masjid demolition, Gujarat riots harm Hinduism itself Kaushik Basu It is time for the average Hindu to reclaim his religion from the madness being unleashed in its name by the VHP and the RSS. The most recent complaint against India’s Muslims, namely, that they did not accept the Shankaracharya’s ‘‘reasonable offer’’ is absurd. The Kanchi Shankaracharya, true to his reputation, had started out in earnest — to engage in dialogue, to take and to give. But what was offered in the end, under relentless pressure from the VHP, was quite egregious. The Hindus would …

Balle balle! Sikh farmers work their magic in arid Kutch Rupam Jain Nair Kothara (Bhuj), July 17: A Gurdwara, a Guru Nanak school, scores of Sikh men wearing turbans and flowing beards. A visitor to this remote village in arid Kutch should be forgiven for wondering if he’s in rural Punjab. Over 200 Sikh families from Punjab and 50 Hindu families from Haryana have settled here for nearly a decade and are turning their patches of wasteland into oases yielding bumper cotton harvests. ‘‘It’s a mini Punjab out here,’’ says district collector P. Sharma, adding that the Punjabis have transformed the land with dedication and drip irrigation. He says it all started in 19…
