  1. Brief showreel of an innovative new website to help todays western Sikh youth learn about Sikhism and the Punjabi language and culture. Having taken 5 years to develop by one individual the site will be launched on a subscription basis at £5 per household per by month in early 2011. Post release future updates will include kirtan time, nursery rhymes, more games and interactive challenges, storytime and hopefully much more. We would love to hear thoughts and feedback from you all, including kids, parents and even potential investors/venture capatalists. Either leave your feedback/comments below or email us direct at info@learn-punjabi.co.uk. A Facebook group will also be launched soon to help you follow us. We hope you enjoy the video demo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC51ZL1q1dg

  2. To say men do not enter the kitchen in the Gurdwara is just not true. Men are always making langar in the langar hall. They are washing the dishes, serving the langar. Taking out the trash bags. The only place where men have a minor presence is in making parshadaa. One peson's, personal experience can't speak for every Gurdwara in this world. I have been to many Gurdwaras, here in Canada and in India. Both countries have men and woman doing seva in the langar hall and the kitchen. All this stuff that women are not to participate in Sikhi is the view of the punjabi fanatics. It's the lack of Sikhi teachings and not accepting Sikhi teachings, that create this kind of behavior and thinking.

  3. As far as I know, Guru Ji said that striking out in self-defence was the only way such actions could be justified. Obviously you could argue there is justification for what they put you through, but its not worth it especially if the fella in question reports it to the police. Then you'll be a Sikh with a criminal record which is never a good thing. In your mind its such a huge issue but to others, it'll seem petty and opportunistic. I do understand about revenge and handing out "justice" to those that deserve it, but brother, if you took revenge for something like this it would only make you look foolish. I'm pretty sure you'd feel good about it but long-term, its not worth the hassle. There is one person in my life who I dream of destroying with my bare fists, every second of the day. Its eating me up inside. Like you I think of situations where I could hide in the shadows, and then drag the paapi into an alley and just go for it. Anyway I've come to learn that I should leave such decisions to Waheguru. If I deserve peace from having my tormentor punished, God will punish that individual for me. I know its easy to say this (trust me), but if you have belief in Waheguru then it should be a bit easier to leave everything in His hands. There's a saying in Punjabi that divine justice isn't like a dog, i.e. if you kick a dog it attacks you in return immediately. Divine justice takes its time and only arrives when Waheguru decrees it should. Its not a knee-je_rk reaction like a dog-bite. You know what I mean? Anyway that's what I think.

  4. I think we need to make an official complaint as a community to the makers of this video. We should not let these dusht get away with this and actually make money out of mocking our sikhi and pimping our own girls. Look at what happened to gore, they slowly slowly allowed little things (on this sort of scale) to creep into their media and now people openly insult and mock jesus. I couldn't care less about the video if not for the Gurdwara reference. Does anyone have the contact details of this MC special (more like special needs, ganja fool), and his company. The whole community needs to come down on this HARD. Their inbox should be full of Gursikh emails. It might seem small but in my eyes this is direct insult and attack on Sikhi, and if we do not nip this kind of thing in the bud, it will get worse.

  5. Dal singh raises a valid point - there are other problems, that are connected, however, if you try and suggest that they are the same, then i'm afraid it just comes across as obstructive (and i'm sure your not). These people that own off licenses and the likes, its different problem. Whilst the Gurdwara movement is happening, its best to concentrate on that, then, and if, with Maharaj kirpa the sevadaars are successful, then we can all come together and strategise on how best to move forward with the problem you mentioned. Remember, selling as an individual is a much more complex and nuanced difficulty than the outright consumption on Gurdwara property. Rather than run before we walk or whatever the cliche is, how about we all concentrate on taking things one at a time and deal with the most pressing issues first? Tav Parsad ji puts it perfectly, what happens in our Gurdwaray has a knock on effect and the results will filter down. Back to the topic at hand, it looks promising that RST have agreed to a meeting, I'm sure that the people attending the meeting will be level headed and won't react to the half-truths and exaggerated claims that will fly at them. From my limited knowledge in my line of work, I know that it is generally not a common occurrence to have any suspected firebombings of cars, and roughing up of individuals (especially with a religious context) leaked to the mass media. So if the RST lot say this is happening, perhaps the Satkaar team ought to ask for the Crime Report Reference Number (every case with the police is given one of these). This way, Satkaar can promise to assist the investigation and if any news is uncovered they can report it using this reference number. Call the RST out, lets see how many "crimes" have really been committed against them. Its not an outlandish request, its a simple appeal to help catch whoever supposedly behind these and if anything, harming the Satkaar movement by hiding behind the name. I've heard that the Sikh Channel have strong links with the RST so it will be especially interesting to hear how neutral the debate is, whether its simply a chance for the RST committee to throw out allegations (that may be defamatory in nature - Satkaar's legal team should be watching for this) or whether they allow a full discussion, without tainting it. The other question is whether certain 'sensitive' topics will be addressed, the ones Sarbha Panjab ji has mentioned for example, and more importantly, whether they will be shown in the final, edited version that airs on Saturday evening....

  6. Back to the collective responsibility issue... Satkaar is no A-Team or jathebhandi...Satkaar is every Sikhs duty... We seem to possess great expertise in highlighting issues but lack commitment/desire to physically do anything about the issues. So when someone makes a stand, please do not just wait in isolation and watch the show, please also make a stand too. This may mean that we are challenged or taken out of our comfort zones...but if individual Sikhs are not going to take initiative then who is? Over the last 6 years I have read some inspiring posts on sikhsangat.com and I have followed the postings of some amazingly passionate users. I don't personally know them but I feel that I share a common issue with them and that is to give the Satkaar (Respect) to Sikhi that we know is deserved. But sometimes I feel these amazingly passionate users still remain on the back-bench and do not propel themselves forward in the real world Please do not fall into a trap of seeing Satkaar as some kind of formal bunch of people, rest assure it's not. Satkaar is every Sikh's sewa, every Sikh who feels that our Guru's principles are being abused and manipulated. Satkaar is about the grass roots of Sikhi and is about all those voices of the sangat that go unheard. I beg you all, let's stop looking at others in our community to drive change and be the drivers of that change ourselves. It's not impossible... Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj bestowed that ability upon his Sikhs.

  7. The only thing that will clean things up is losing the attitude that someone else will fix the problems. There's no fun in clouding issues by identifying other issues. And there's no fun in challenging others to fix something we all have to fix collectively. If the Gurdwaras start to practice what they preach then I'm sure Sikh Society will change for the better. Work on strengthing the roots.

  8. It is clear that RST's financial position is robust enough to comfortly survive with zero income from the Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgharia Hall. As GurSa Singh has stated above, there appears to be little financial reasoning to have the immoral income stream via the hall. As per Dr Bhogal's exact words on Panth Time, the hall was gifted by members of the "Sangat" 20 years ago. Therefore, one can only assume RST have no financial commitment to meet regarding the hall, except for running costs. Along with key deciding factors such as Gurbani, Gurmat, Akal Takth Sahib Sandesh, Jathedar Ji's direct advise, Gurdwara Maryada and even Economics, the question arises: why does RST feel that there is a necessity to promote parties, meat and alcohol in the hall???

  10. There is nothing to be foolish by following the footsteps of our guru sahib ji. Sikhi is very plain and simple dharam. Veerji, What you do or what you will do is your own personal decision and nobody will stop you. Nobody here or in your social life can force you to change your mind. It is you who have to make decision; not us. If you feel happy by not following sikhi then that is your karam. If you feel hurt but still sticking with sikhi then it shows your strong will. Whatever the outcomes are; they will either show your strong will or weakness. Human is not made of tough iron or a robot which is perfect; there are imperfections but it is upto us whether to correct our imperfections or continue to live our materialistic life to please few manmat ppl in our society. If you are looking for pity then my friend, we can't help you. There are few who do not care about religion but there are many who are willing to choose death over kesh katal. I am not just talking but I walked the talk long time ago.. It was hard for me to transform from patka to daastar but i did it with strong will.. I owe it to sikh soldiers; whom i felt proud of and decided to keep turban thru my high school years... I was the only Sikh and east indian student in high school ever graduated and probably only turban wearing sikh teen ever lived in the rural city of 9000 in deep south. Sticking to the topic.. We should discourage patka wearing trend.. few years ago, i saw a new trend of many ppl wearing this weird patka type cap in and around delhi..

  11. I don't understand how a sikh could partake in this beadbi. The gianis who readily allow this are prostituting themselves for money and nothing less.

  12. Did you read what i said, I said my point is to say why is it taking so long to get Sri Dasam Granth, into our gurdwara, maybe we should ask our committies to do praskash in gurdwara. where did i mention that they need to be parkash in takhats. I already know that they are parkash in two of the takhats. First of all I believe in Sri Dasam Granth Sahib. Let me repeat my question since your not understanding it. Im saying why is it taking long for Sri Dasam Granth and Sri Sarbloh Granth to be installed in every Gurdwaras. Like your local Gurdwaras and in other countries.

  13. @ whyhellothere - I've read a lot about them but do they even really exist? I mean honestly. I was referring to the double standards of Western governments and their collusion with the Rupert Murdoch-owned media, although there is a lot of evidence for the existence of the Illuminati, etc. I dunno - it seems a bit far fetched to me. Yet I can't stop reading about these theories!!! I sometimes wonder if these groups are aware of the 'Raj Karega Khalsa' prediction (is it a prediction or just a metaphorical statement?). Would they ever let the world reach a state where the Khalsa would have to return and basically take over the Middle East and South East Asia? What would happen then - would we fight with Rome (the Vatican)? So many questions.

  14. Thats really all you can do ji. People can't control their thoughts, it's part of the darkness of kaljug, we're all mentally ill until we are able to conrol our thoughts and merge into the creator. The line "you remind me of my sister" should do the trick. If you don't have a sister, then maybe you remind me of my cousin. We're meant to see the world as our brothers and sisters except for our spouses. That would help in trying to control lustful thoughts and dealing with this kind of thing. Look at them like they are mentally handicapped sisters (as are you, we all are until we reach His Court.!) Try not to see them as enemies but see god within every one of them, it'll make it easier to see them as your sisters whether they're black, white, chinese, Indian or other. It's due to our karma that we suffer, anything bad that happens to you is actually your own fault (karma from this or previous lives) and may even be blessings (make you turn to god in some way). Don't blame them.

  15. Revenge is anger (krodh), god does not like the demon Krodh- it is evil, if it wasn't it wouldn't be one of the 5 thieves. I know it sounds typical saying leave it to god but really that's what you should do. Obviously it's your life, your karma so its your choice but you'd be adding greatly to your karma, not getting rid of it like you prob have been up till this day. Whatever happens to us is gods hukam, we gain karma and get rid of it. Getting punched was you getting rid of your karma from evil deeds you;'ve done in this life or your previous lives (more likely). Do you really want another beating or slap in the face in the future which is what you'll be getting if you carry out this poisonous act of violence. When you think about it, it was: -Your fault you got punched (karma from this or previous lives) - You erasing this karma, by taking the beating. -Gods hukam (everything is, it's put there to help you find god even if you don't think it is, (sometimes it seems like it most defintaely is not) it pushes you towards him in some way) -A test, god wants to see if you're ready/ worthy of meeting him, your tests will be hard, sometimes torture, but the reward is a billion plus times better). -A show that god loves you, by just giving you pleasure, you will not find him, hardly anyone remembers him in times of happiness (happiness that is actually false.) Wwe turn to him in times of pain/ helplesness and back then and right now you are helpless- helpless against them and now helpless against Krodh/revenge/ego- these demons/illnesses will not go away on their own, you need to force them out with his Grace. I hope you make the right decision Ji.
