Geezer only reason is because majority of Sikhs are from what you would call a jatt background. Lets be realistic most Sikhs are not amritdhari or even keshdhari (ok, you can argue the definition of a Sikh and we all no a Sikh is amritdhari, but we all know we class people as Sikh just because they have Sikh ancestory or identify with the faith. As only a small minority are Amritdhari). JSinghnz, I say I'm a proud Sikh, but I'm only accepted as one by more orthodox Sikhs when is required. E.g would be when we need numbers then we are Sikhs otherwise we are not. (I do not grow kesh). Like census in UK, or 1984 rememberance rally 'come down to your local gurdwara if you never tied a turban and get someone to help, we want a sea of orange', or how about the riots in summer (don't know about Brum), but not many tyar bar tyar Singhs around. Also i don't see the reason as to why if i have Jatt (Sandhu) heritage I should need to be ashamed of it, I'm not saying YO! look at me - mere Jatt AHH!, Like some Sikhs from certains backgrounds will be ashamed of their background. (like non-amritdhari). We all know Sikhi has no place for caste system BUT don't be so naive to even think it doesn't exist. Theres so many Gurdwareh based on caste, like just look at the Ramgharia Bunga's in vicnity of Sri Harmandir Sahib. Yes I know the history of why Ramgarhia is associated with a caste. As until Misl period their was no such caste association. It's all to do with Jassa Singh (not Alhuwalia), who lived in his fort named Ram Garh so all artisans espically tarkhans as was Jassa Singh Ramgharia, took it on. But unfortunately the point I'm making is even Sri Harmandir Sahib has in it's vacinty caste asssociation.

Sorry to hear your families reaction they are most probably doing it in jest to tease you a little. Have faith, you have decided to keep your full kesh so big up, I mean that is a big desicion on your part. Off course you'll get a job, marry etc(I presume as they worry about you not working so you must study?). End of the day nearly everyone has the right too make a choice, no one forces us with a gun to the head. So it may take your family time to adjust etc, but brother be STRONG. It was very good all of it. Why do a few members here think Sikhs aren't allowed to engage in socailly acceptable and popular cultural practices of the day, they won the contest and were awarded - it showed the Singhs in good light. I'm sure no 100% confident puratan Singhs had a sense of humour and took part in popular cultural practices of the time e.g you see gatka performed in shows in India to this day, Nihangs on horseback with a spear hiittng a target a pace etc. Okay hesitantly I take on board some comments about it being unprofessional, amateur etc. BUT thats in through western born eyes, I mean that would have been more polished had it been a show like Britains got talent but it was India based, and BTW I think even had that exact performance been on Brtians got talent it would have made it to the finals as it was AWESOME! i don't think the video was that great. Only after about 5.20 mins was good - less than 1 minute of footage then the Gurbani. It was just like the typical sterotypes people have of Jatts, (just like Sardars in bollywood movies), It was just Jatt bashing, common a dump guy who didn't have a conversation just read a script of we Jatts did this we did that. Come on it weren't a documentry just a rubbish attempt to show jatts in a bad light as it wasn't balanced as every thing was conteracted by the Sardar, it made him look more intelligent. Only the Singh at the end talked sense.

I'm married to a non-born Sikh, have been happily married and have 2 great kids, couldn't ask for anything more in life. Im not the typical sikhsangat.com member, Im non keshdhari and have only learnt about Sikhi just a couple of years ago. I only just learnt to read gurmukhi and only pray very little compaired to a Sikh (just mool mantar, but I do it with complete sharda without fail). I'm what you'd describe as a Sunday Sikh. I take my kids to Gurdwara every weekend, I will enroll them into the classes their but they are under age, yet. I try to teach them about Sikhi but both are young only 6 and 2. My wife is also as much Sikh as the majority of Sikhs in the UK, (before someone says we're not, I mean people who would be described as Sikh, or asked to be on census forms or make up numbers etc). I think I most probably have a different outlook on life compaired to most members here but to be honest there are various denominations of Sikhs in the world and on this site only a small cross section represent their views. Yes they are what are proper Sikhs, and my immediate family most probably wouldn't be called a Sikh family, you'd say we are Punjabi. My parents were also born in UK so they were not very religiously inclined, however they are very much so nowadays, they are proper Sikhs. Actually it's because of them I wanted to learn about the faith of our forefathers. They took my family to India on yatra and after that I wanted to leran more. (Even though i'd been India loads of times before, incl. Harmandir Sahib). BTW I had anand karj, in the OP statement it says "If Sikhi is important, then you want an Anand Karaj. But definietly there is a statement from Akal Takht stating people of different faiths wanting to marry each other by anand karj have to actually prove they are going to be Sikhs by changing their names on legal docs to incl. Singh / Kaur. Maybe someone can post it on here. But I asked the question when I found out was theres many people who have anand karj, both have Sikh ancestory but don't have Singh or Kaur on legal docs i.e. passport, driving licence etc. It makes no sense to me but maybe someone can enlighten me because why would a non Sikh become Sikh by just having Singh or Kaur? Like my surname is Sandhu but on all my papers etc. I have used Singh as it was on my birth certificate so my wife uses Kaur but it wasn't because of the sandesh as I wasn't even aware of it when I married. If anyone wants to ask me or my wife anything on inter faith marriage pm me, but honestly hand on heart we have never once had an issue over faith. (Culturally we are the same).

I don't know much about this but it's intresting that you think girls from amritdhari families prefer money/ trim singhs, why would this be? I mean why would females who have been raised in such environments have a preference for partners who do not observe the faith like male members of their family? How many Singhs would admit it?

What are you on? How can you justify the cowardly actions of terrorists who murder innocent civilians? Not only christians were murdered and they were not all white either. No decent human would condone such acts. Maybe you would have had a point if they had targetted military institutions but it was everday civilians. I have asked a few times on this forum a similar question not one direct response. The question regarding possible beadbi which contains the points you raise It has to do with Gurbani apps on our mobile phones. Whats worse is we keep phones in our jean / trouser pockets front or back or if lady in a handbag possibly. We touch them without washing our hands and if we are viewing and the phone rings? We answer it, putting the phone next to our mouth and speaking into it. Then the call is finished and the gurbani is back on the screen! Now who has ever carried a gutka sahib or any gurbani in their pockets and treated it the same way? Just because the app is closed does it make it ok? The gurbani is still physically there even if not opened. It's like having a gutka sahib open or having it wrapped in a rumalla sahib. The gurbani is there but is closed and wrapped up out of view. Just like a gurbani app, BUT IT'S STILL THERE or not? Yes, I do it's a shame when I asked other sikhsangat members to meet upto stop the beadbi hardly any responses and the ones who did want to meet up did not show up. In UK and India for a fact the majority of Gurbani audio cds / mp3 available are from T-Series, presented by Gulshan Kumar and every cover has an image of Mata on it. Mmmh! Is that meant to be taken literally or is there deeper meaning? As nearly all Gaini's, Kirtani's, Dhadi's, Kathavachaks etc. are doing it as a job, they get paid for reading Gurbani. Also in most cases you have to pay for gurbani books or audio also.

Sorry OP my advice may have been wrong.

I'm not the best person to ask maybe other amritdhari Singhs or panj payre could give you good / better advice. My advice would be for you to re-evaluate. Just take some time out. Keep as much rehat as you can, all the paath you do, do it with sharda. Don't force yourself. Take small steps and build up too what you should do. BUT do it because you want too. NOT because you feel you need too. For example just get up and recite Mool Mantar, or First 5 pauris of Japji Sahib or Japji Sahib da paat which wont take too long do ardas. The other bani's listen to them on an ipod whilst traveling to work. Slowly build yourself up. DONT FORCE yourself to do paath as a formality do it because of love, do with sharda, slowly you will reach your goal, even if it takes years. It's better to do with sharda than just spitting out the words which could end up in resentment. Trust me small steps are better than none. Also keep in mind no steps are better than keeping up a pretence and festering hate.

i don't know but aren't the charasi lakh (8,400,000) joons the punishment for not reaching sachkand. Human live is a gift in which we are given the ability too prove ourselves and rid ourselves of this cycle and form with the almighty in sackand. BTW chaurasi lakh is a figure which is not exact, it is always fluctauting due to speices extincting and new speices being formed. A recent scienitific study showed there was over 8.4 million spices in the world, cant remeber exact figure but it was clsoe to 8.4 mill.

I'm not amritdhari but I pray daily, I don't do it because I want something or need something I do it because I want too, I only do a little paath. But surely it's better to jap mool mantar or waheguru simran with sharda with a clean heart rather than being amritdarhi and doing nitnem as a formallity which you have to do. Your heart is not in it but you do because you have taken amrit due to pressure from family or someone close. Please I'm not looking for arguments, most amritdharis are 100% true in their believe, but there are a few who aren't. So the question the OP asked well I think it's better for non amritdharis to pray with sharda and slowly they will come closer to waheguru. It's better to take small steps with a true heart rather than showing a facade to the world as Waheguru knows all.

I think in other parts of India esp. Kashmir, North East and South they have found such devices (Eg. Jihadists, Maoist, Naxalites etc). Also Ambala is not in Punjab.

@BhaiSukhSingh - Gurbani related artefacts have been sold for centuries. Just visit most large Gurdwara's on a Sunday, they have a shop within the premises or have a stall selling Gutka sahibs, pictures, prints you get loads of stuff with gurbani sold such as books etc. for a profit. In India it's no different just visit Harmandir Sahib or any other historical Gurdwara. Anadpur Sahib, Just round the corner from Keshgar Sahib theres a market with loads of stalls same with Hazur Sahib. @ Kaljugi - The company is called 1469. Yes most probably it is linked to the year Baba Ji was born. However, what is the problem with that? Why do some people like to cause a controvesy out of nothing.

In purataan times gursikhs wrote and spoke many languages. Example Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji wrote maharaj de bir in arabic. In India you get gutka sahibs in Hindi and Urdu as well as Gurmukhi. So it is imperative to have a way of translating to the sangat. A good idea is the projection screens in Gurughars which have English and Punjabi translations aswell as the Gurbani, lets not forget even though Gurbani is written in Gurmukhi it still needs to be translated into modern Punjabi which most people speak and understand today. As it is still difficult for those versed in Punjabi to a high standard to interpret Gurbani. Off course English in Uk or other western countries is a must.

Slightly off topic but I have been speaking to some amritdhari youths recently. Majority are chardikala Singhs. But there are some , i'm not sure if they are trying to catch me out, by me saying somethng wrong but they say they only took amrit because they had too, there parents expected them too do so. They were not forced but could not really say no. They hate getting up early and doing nitnem, and have commited kurehits. I can elaborate more on pm but I don't want to on the forum as this is my real name, and don't want people asking me who I am talking about and what they have done.

Yes we should give 10%. Baba Nanak stated 3 things by which we should lead our daily lives Naam Japo, Vand shako & kirat karo. Naam Jaapo is very important to connect with god, the other 2 refer to this pyshical life we live. Vand shako is also very important, as we should give charity to those less fortunate. However, Baba Nanak also stressed kirat karo. Earn an honest living. All three are important. But I think Kirat kar and vand shako are related. You can only share something if you have something to share. But to have something to share you have to work for it HONESTLY. Now claiming benefits, when you already work is stealing. It's not exactly honest is it? So would you give dasvaand out of your benefits which your not entitled too? As it contradicts kirat karo. How can you give dasvaand out of dishonest earnings?
