  1. I guess our Gurus must have been immature and fixated on appearance because they made keeping kesh mandatory. If only they were more enlightened and could have understood that appearance does not matter! And please explain what his death in a traffic accident has to do with him supposedly caring about Sikhi.
  2. I find it really sad and puzzling that on a Sikh forum (where people are constantly complaining about "liberal Sikhs" trying to water down Sikhi and reshape it to fit their lifestyle/views/agenda), it is controversial for me to point out that someone living an anti-Gurmat lifestyle should not be held up as a panthic leader. It is sad that he died, and it's nice that he at least said some positive things during his time on earth. But perhaps we can leave it at that instead of engaging in absurd hyperbole.
  3. You people are so quick to celebrate someone as some sort of panthic hero because he said a few nice things about Bhindranwale. Is that how low your bar is? Actions speak louder than words, and if he actually cared about Sikhi he wouldn't be living a lifestyle that is so clearly at odds with a Gurmat lifestyle. Aside from his personal conduct, it is sad that Sikhs are so quick to make a hero out of someone whose political motivations and intentions seemed questionable at best.
  4. I'm sorry if believing in Sikhi provokes such a reaction from you. But being in a "committed relationship" with plans to marry in the future is not part of a Gurmat lifestyle. Neither is cutting your hair. Who cares if he wore a turban occasionally during the farmers' protests? It was just a prop that he wore whenever he felt like it. He still obviously made it a priority every day to make sure his beard and mustache were perfectly trimmed to d-bag specifications. The guy effectively has "I don't believe in Sikhi" tattooed on his forehead, but Sikhs are so insecure that they don't want to take his word for it.
  5. You are right that we don't have anyone resembling leaders and role models. But I would go a step further and argue that the need we seem to have for it is an indication of our weakness. There is a reason that that the succession of human Gurus ended and our Guru is Sri Guru Granth Sahib. We have been entrusted to think for ourselves and focus on pursuing a lifestyle in line with Sikhi. But we have not reached such maturity and still want to be led every step of the way.
  6. A guy with a haircut with a Bhindranwale tattoo. I'm not sure where to even begin. What a <banned word filter activated>.
  7. This hypocrisy is not surprising. We just have to look at his lifestyle. Why does a 37-year-old man have a "girlfriend"? Since when are premarital relations accepted in Sikhi? And if this guy had so much love for Sikhi, why did he voluntarily choose to look like a Hindu instead? It is sad that he died. But people making him out to be some sort champion of the cause are mistaken.
  8. What on earth do artifacts belonging to a king who lived 200 years ago have to do with "creating a stable geographical location for a people and having the ability to defend it and create a nourishing environment for Sikhi and Sikhis to flourish in"?
  9. Okay, I understand what value this might have to people who feel that nationalism is important. But I think that spiritual development will free one from any need for such validation. At the end of the day, whether or not others believe that we had an "civilization" should not matter. I think one of the problems with Sikhi is that too many gravitate towards it for reasons of nationalism and communal pride. We should strive the develop spiritually to the point where we are above such things.
  10. Please explain what importance these materialistic things have in forming a connection with waheguru. Read some gurbani sometime and you will begin to understand how meaningless attachment to material things (and other worldly things) is.
  11. Sorry, but why is there so much concern over material artifacts? Do you guys even believe in Sikhi?
  12. Why do you care about Punjabi culture? Hindu Punjabis identify as Hindu first, couldn't care less about being Punjabi. Muslim Punjabis identify as Muslims first, couldn't care less about being Punjabi. Sikhs meanwhile usually identify as being Punjabi first and Sikh second. Sikhs, instead of putting their religion first, can't let go of stupid degenerate Punjabi culture.
  13. If these people are supporting themselves with such work, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. That's great. But it is a far cry from the kinds of influential professions that Jewish people hold. Why do you have to resort to ad hominem attacks? It is sad that you can't discuss anything without doing so.
  14. You are showing how clueless you are because the Democratic party offers unwavering support to Israel. You seem to think the US Democratic party is the same as the UK Labour party. It's not. First-generation Jews did have to rely primarily on unskilled jobs.
  15. Who cares if trucking pays well relative to other unskilled jobs? I am talking about influential professions (influential due to the societal impact and/or the high compensation). Jewish people are highly overrepresented in these kinds of professions, they are highly overrepresented among multimillionaires and billionaires, and this overrepresentation is why Jewish people have so much influence in society. Most of the places in California that have lots of Sikh doctors on staff are in horrible parts of the state where nobody who has better options wants to live. There is a big difference between being a prominent surgeon living in Beverly Hills and being a Punjabi doctor who was educated at some horrible Caribbean medical school living in some backwater like Fresno or Bakersfield. Get back to me when Sikhs have political power because there are hordes of wealthy Sikhs who politicians rely on for campaign donations, or when Sikhs are able to shape national narratives through being everywhere in media and entertainment.
  16. Jews like Chomsky are a tiny minority. The vast, vast majority of Jews are very pro-Israel. Jewish people are in general very intelligent, and that has allowed them to be very successful and influential. The expulsion of Jews shifted the scientific center of the world from Germany to the US and played a huge role in turning the US into a superpower. Jewish people are about 2% of the population in the US but are highly overrepresented in politics, media, entertainment, finance, tech, law, academics, ... basically any influential profession that matters. Both political parties in the US are extremely pro-Israel for a reason. In what areas are Sikhs overrepresented? Truck driving? Give me a break ...
  17. Bad comparison. 1. Jewish people tend to be really intelligent. Sikhs are generally extremely stupid (I hate to say it, but it is true) 2. Jewish people help each other out. Sikhs are always fighting with each other. 3. Jews who are not religious (or are even atheist) look out for Jewish interests. This does not apply to the same degree to Sikhs. 4. Jews have institutions, wealth, political power, etc. Sikh institutions are a joke. Sikhs who have anything resembling wealth or political power mostly do not care about Sikhi or are actively anti-Sikhi. I could go on and on ...
  18. Human beings are disappointing. I think that Sikhs have too much of a tendency to put others on a pedestal. Everyone wants to have somebody to look up to. The way I see it, there is a reason that we do not have a Guru in human form. We are being trusted to think for ourselves. We should stop looking outward and look inward.
  19. I don't know if something like "Waheguru, help me get into medical school" (which probably accounts for most of the "praying") is prayer in the real sense
  20. I know it's not about this website, it's about the (religious) Sikh community, which is tiny. No, I didn't get ever get married (did you not notice other forum members call me an "incell"?) I made a strong effort for many years to meet someone, and I got nowhere. I have given up. And considering all of my personal flaws and shortcomings, it is probably for the best.
  21. It seems like overkill to make an entire website and create matching algorithms in order to facilitate marriage for a community that consists of about 7 people.
  22. A "turbaned sardar father" who also has a trimmed beard and surely is turbaned only because that was the norm among Sikhs when he was growing up. So him being a "sardar" doesn't have much meaning. Sadly, today's Punjabi families are always trying to go out of their way to show how "modern" they are. People who would object to their daughter being in a beauty pageant are looked at as backwards extremists.
  23. Why is Punjabi culture so dumbed-down that these singers/actors get elevated so much? This guy mostly creates filth. It is sad that he has any influence whatsoever.
