  1. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH "We wouldn't be having these issues before the SGPC was formed" Sure we did - they were called Mahants and were under colonial British government control. Hindu rituals incorporated into Gurdwaras, ancestral claim to Gurdwaras as personal property, and many other unsavory things. Unfortunately, the Gurdwara Act 1925 still maintained government oversight over Gurdwaras and transitioned from British corruption to Indian government corruption and interference. "http://etheses.bham.ac.uk/3990/1/Riat13PhD.pdf" - pg. 122. I liked this. Read parts of it and it captured the problems of the post Raj period with Gurdwaras.
  2. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Anyone able to take a screenshot of the FB page and provide here - you know, in case someone comes on here saying its all made up and before it is taken down and people swear it's all a lie.

    Tough Mudder

VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH If beadbi was a concern as proposed, we could not exercise or do any seva, as it may risk getting the Kakkars dirty. We are to treat them as a part of our body and maintain them accordingly. Gursikhs would never have gone to battle, as the Kakkars would have suffered damage. Mud, sweat, blood, chunks of flesh - all things that Kakkars of Gursikhs were exposed to in battle. I don't think this constitutes beadbi. Now, if you were going to try to pack a Gutka Sahib on your person while competing in Tough Mudder...

    Raag

VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH The shabad seems to be from Savaiyae of the Bhatts, which are not framed in any raag in Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, so that cannot be used as an indicator for which raag it could be. Apart from a trained musician listening and identifying the raag (or otherwise being familiar with raags or knowing the notations and looking them up), there really is no way apart from potentially asking the person doing keertan.
  5. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH The commitment of the person may be tested and you may face a few questions related to your short hair, but if the commitment is there, you most likely will not encounter an issue. It happens enough that it is not rare.
  6. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Sikh Rehat Maryada: The under mentioned four transgressions (tabooed practices) must be avoided: 1. Dishonoring the hair; 2. Eating the meat of an animal slaughtered the Muslim way; 3. Cohabiting with a person other than one’s spouse; 4. Using tobacco. In the event of the commission of any of these transgressions, the transgressor must get rebaptised. If a transgression is committed unintentionally and unknowingly, the transgressor shall not be liable to punishment. http://new.sgpc.net/sikh-rehat-maryada-in-english/ - Article XXIV - Ceremony of Baptism or Initiation However, if your mind is not at ease after reading this, doing Ardaas, reading Gurbani, doing seva etc., then you can go to the Punj Pyare and that should resolve any lingering anguish.
  7. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH It may be advisable to do this on a day with fewer Sangat or right before the Gurpurab divan. You would get more compliance with the committee (who may already be very busy with preparations for the Gurpurab), get the visiting group to focus on what you are saying and be able to easily navigate the Gurudwara and its related facilities (langar hall, Nishan Sahib, sarovar?, etc.). If done right before the Gurpurab, you can do the tour/presentation and the group could stay for the Gurpurab divan. When we (local Sangat in California) have done this before, we typically choose either a weekday or a Saturday in the afternoon as there is no divan, the Gurdwara is quiet and you can effectively do whatever you need in the Gurdwara without any issue or conflicts. London Gurudwaras all typically have an evening divan daily - you could do this right before the divan starts. The visiting group can then see your talk turn into action. Bundha's list of of topics/areas to touch upon is pretty comprehensive. Some very high level history would be good to provide. Our typical format (Sikhism definition - brief history - creation of Khalsa - physical identity/Kakkars - beliefs - modern times history/history in the local region where the presentation is done). A walking tour starting from the outside of the Gurudwara and working their way in like any devotee visiting would also keep them engaged, participating and interested. Reinforcing that they are not required to to anything they do not want to (barring the taking shoes off, covering your head, no alcohol/drugs on their person or partaken of and being generally respectful and quiet per your instructions as you lead them on their journey) would establish some general ground rules for their visit and put them at ease about what they can and cannot do.
  8. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Parents have a responsibility towards their children to keep them safe, happy and away from the evl - not to be evil incarnate. Have no guilt, move, pursue any and all legal charges you want against that monster and I hope your torment sees an end. There is no excuse for this and he is a complete monster. God does not punish people for getting away from monsters.
  9. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/apac/other/033ori000002748u00031v00.html The metadata seems to state that this saroop is lying on a bookshelf in the British Museum (or perhaps library, not sure) and there is concern that there is no Satkaar of Gurbani being done. To be clear - I am saying Adi Granth Sahib because this saroop would not have the Bani of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib (from the dates provided). http://www.sikhsentinel.com/sikhsentinel0301/britishbir.htm - this article may in connection to it. Can some of the UK Sikhs look into this please?
  10. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Leave while you can if you are not married. His rude Punjabi-ness is showing and you don't want to deal with that once it is marriage. There is no real support in India for you if you get too involved and you don't want to find out how rude he may be once you are married and he fully takes you for granted.
  11. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Personal ardaas goes on all of the time in Gurdwaras. From the Sikh who made degh and is standing doing ardaas, to whoever brings in langar for bhog (busy, larger Gurdwaras do not always wait for final Ardaas at bhog as langar and degh is continuous) to the sangat which visits and stands there for a little longer before matha tek and then sits down. 1. While someone is reciting bani from guru granth sahib ji for the sangat or if someone is reading guru granth sahib ji for his/her personal reading, can I do my personal ardaas for myself at the same time? - Yes, you can silently go to where you matka tek, stand (probably best to the side so others can matha tek) and silently do your Ardaas. 2. If I need to do my own personal ardaas, do I have to wait until reciting from guru granth sahib ji is over and guru granth sahib ji is covered with rumala sahib? No wait needed. The reason why I am asking is because most of the times if i visit gurughar, most of the times people are reading bani either for the sangat or for their personal readings. I just want to avoid any beadbi. Could anyone please guide me to the right way. Beadbi with "doing two things at the same time" mean doing two Sangati activities or activities that interfere with each other - Keertan and Katha, Akhand Paath Sahib and Keertan etc. The Sangat should be ideally focused on one program at a time (though this does not necessarily apply with Gurudwaras that have multiple halls, as they separate the Sangat to where only one divan is being held separate from another in another hall). You doing a personal ardaas silently will not interfere with any program or divan.

    Glasses

VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH If your glasses are metal and not brittle, you can bend the legs a bit more straight, tie your Dastaar and basically slide the legs from the bottom underneath the dastaar towards your ears so they sit like regular glasses on your ears, but don't hook onto your ears (the legs sit in between your ear and your head and rest on top of your ear). The Dastaar will hold your glasses in place.
  13. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH I want a recording of Badal Sahib doing Nitnem.
  14. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Good. Same guy no? http://sikhsiyasat.net/2015/04/10/granthi-who-forgot-to-report-on-duty-in-darbar-sahib-resigns/
  15. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Yes, it is taught by the Punj Pyare at all Amrit Sanchars. Whatever they say to do and how to, do it that way.
  16. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH An old joke goes kinda like this: One day, scientists triumphed that they had created a human from dirt. They hailed their achievement and mocked their status equal to God. God appeared at all of the ruckus. God: What's all the ruckus? Scientists: We have made a human from dirt. We are your equals! We don't need you. God: Great! Now make dirt... Scientists: ... I mean really? So God is so powerless that It cannot make more souls? This is the same Almighty that created the Universe with ONE word. The same Almighty that (per science's own theories) may be sustaining multiple UNIVERSES in multiple DIMENSIONS. Humans are so dumb...
  17. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Seems to be #1. Kalyug's savior is Guru Nanak Sahib. Satgur in terms of Akaal Purakh outside of the embodiment of the Ten Gurus has been a savior since the beginning of creation (all of the sakhis of the different Bhagats from other Yugs are also in Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and the Almighty is their savior through those ages). It also seems odd to place a "comma" (if you will, a brief pause or break in the sentence) after Satgur, as it would place Nanak and Jin together, which seems to not break up correctly and in poetic structure, seems at odds with the rest of the Shabad. To maintain the structure of the verse with a comma after Satgur, it would require placing a comma after Karam, which renders the line strange in meaning. Just look at the line that precedes it: ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਤੇਰੀ ॥ Giaan Dhhiaan Kishh Karam N Jaanaa Saar N Jaanaa Thaeree || I know nothing about wisdom, meditation and good deeds; I know nothing about Your excellence. Sabh Thae Vaddaa Sathigur Naanak Jin Kal Raakhee Maeree ||4||10||57|| Guru Nanak is the greatest of all; He saved my honor in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ||4||10||57||
  18. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH There are two stories about people getting darshan of Dasam Patshah who were not even from Punjab, let alone Amritdhari: A) http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/A_Miracle_During_World_War_II B) http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Makindu_Sikh_Temple - under miracles. Guru Sahib will reveal to those when needed or to those who are truly devoted for Darshan of Guru Sahib (read about Sant Attar Singh Mastuana's foot journey from Punjab to Nanded in the thirst of Darshan of Guru Sahib). Those who have Darshan, opening of Dasam Dwar, and other spiritual occurrences during Amrit Sanchars are through Bhagti from previous births bearing fruit and Kirpa of Guru Sahib (so the stories of elder Gursikhs lead me to believe).
  19. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA,VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH A) It's a forum. B) You are supposed to ask questions - it is how students learn (and Sikh = student). C) Individual is 13, and even if he wasn't, see A) and B). D) No apology needed.
  20. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH I like this composition best as it relates to the topic: (ਬੰਸਾਵਲੀਨਾਮਾ, ਭਾਈ ਕੇਸਰ ਸਿੰਘ "ਛਿੱਬਰ") Makes it absolutely clear what Guru Dasam Patshah's stance and thoughts were on both Granth Sahib's and their relationship to each other. "Chotta Granth" here referring to Sri Dasam Granth Sahib. http://patshahi10.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=245:sri-dasam-granth-beerh-1698-ad-takhat-sri-patna-sahib-&catid=62:historic-beerhs&Itemid=106
  21. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH He definitely seems confused. Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib did nothing to "devastate the countryside".
  22. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Science is the pursuit of the truth by way of observation using the 5 senses and various technological advances that enhance the 5 senses. It is a process meant for all to be able to experience. It takes time, as more and more knowledge is revealed to humanity. It is also prone to errors, as the senses can be fooled and the mind that creates the hypotheses on which scientific experimentation is based can be flawed. Laws and theories can also be inaccurate because not all data is available at the same time. This is constantly an issue while observing the universe - you will hear repeatedly that so and so phenomenon "violates" rules of XXX. It does not violate anything except what humans perceived to be the truth, when in reality, the Truth is something wholly different and not yet fully realized by humans. Religion (specifically relating to Sikhism) is the pursuit of the Absolute Truth. It transcends the 5 senses and focuses on merging with the Infinite One Almighty. Once the individual merges into the Almighty through inner discovery by Naam contemplation (Simran), he/she is given access to the Experience of Absolute Truth. To that person, All Truths are accessible, and are not limited to experimentation, discovery and human perception. That individual (if they can be called such, as they have discarded the self - Haumai - to realize the Absolute Truth. Nevertheless, that human still can retain the physical body and be identified separately from the rest of humanity by the 5 senses) is not bound by space-time-matter or anything worldly. Because both religion and science have similarities because their goal is similar - Truth. However, the methods are different - hypothesis->experimentation->theory->law vs. faith->Naam->Revelation of the Absolute Truth/Merging with the One Almighty. The quality of the Truth is different as well - science produces a relative truth - what we see as correct is correct only as it relates to how much truth we have discovered (and truth is limited based on the amount of data revealed). Absolute Truth simply is - it is Infinite and there is no fallacy to it. The Absolute Truth can, in its Infinite nature, can do as it shall, because it is Absolute - it encompasses all and any and beyond that (because those concepts are human). It simply IS.
  23. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Skeptic will want the same prayer done 1000x across multiple people and facilities with questions answered like was the trial adequately powered, did it eliminate variables, were the results statistically significant. But here you are, prayed and got what you wanted and thank God. :biggrin2:
  24. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Why do you feel compelled to answer them? If it is something you can believe in and have faith in, why worry about others? There have been scientific experiments that have concluded that the body loses 21 grams of mass at death. Further analysis to his results seemed inconclusive. http://www.snopes.com/religion/soulweight.asp Science: "I want repeatable, quantifiable results that are consistent with showing XXX exists". Religion: "My faith has led me to experience that XXX exists. I don't care about the science". At some point, one has to stop answering questions for others and begin to answer them for himself/herself and remain content in his/her own conclusions.
