Parmeshwar

He who created the whole world and who looks after and cares for His creation is called Parmeshwar. Everything that is seen in the world today is the work of this Parmeshwar.

If we look at worldly things, each have a creator. For example, the brains of engineers create aeroplanes, ships and canals; the handiwork of steel workers creates swords, shields, steel utensils, etc.; the toil of farmers in the field provides fruit and vegetables for us. Just as these worldly things have creators, Parmeshwar has created the whole universe. Guru Jee says:

keethaa pasaao eaeko kavaao ||

You created the vast expanse of the Universe with One Word!

this thae hoeae lakh dhareeaao ||

Hundreds of thousands of rivers began to flow.

Japjee Sahib, 16th Pauree

Because Parmeshwar has the greatest power, He can create the entire universe with one command. On the other hand, us mere beings can only create small worldly things because we have only limited powers. However, any small power that we have is derived from the great Parmeshwar, as He operates through His creation. Guru Jee says:

ma 1 ||

First Mehl:

kudharath dhisai kudharath suneeai kudharath bho sukh saar ||

By His Power we see, by His Power we hear; by His Power we have fear, and the essence of happiness.

kudharath paathaalee aakaasee kudharath sarab aakaar ||

By His Power the nether worlds exist, and the Akaashic ethers; by His Power the entire creation exists.

kudharath vaedh puraan kathaebaa kudharath sarab veechaar ||

By His Power the Vedas and the Puraanas exist, and the Holy Scriptures of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic religions. By His Power all deliberations exist.

kudharath khaanaa peenaa painhan kudharath sarab piaar ||

By His Power we eat, drink and dress; by His Power all love exists.

kudharath jaathee jinasee ra(n)gee kudharath jeea jehaan ||

- By His Power come the species of all kinds and colors; by His Power the living beings of the world exist.

kudharath naekeeaa kudharath badheeaa kudharath maan abhimaan ||

By His Power virtues exist, and by His Power vices exist. By His Power come honor and dishonor.

kudharath poun paanee baisa(n)thar kudharath dhharathee khaak ||

By His Power wind, water and fire exist; by His Power earth and dust exist.

sabh thaeree kudharath thoo(n) kaadhir karathaa paakee naaee paak ||

Everything is in Your Power, Lord; You are the all-powerful Creator. Your Name is the Holiest of the Holy.

naanak hukamai a(n)dhar vaekhai varathai thaako thaak ||2||

O Nanak, through the Command of His Will, He beholds and pervades the creation; He is absolutely unrivalled. ||2||

Asa Dee Vaar, 3rd Pauree

Therefore, because He is the Creator and Doer of everything, He resides in everything as well. Guru Jee says:

sabh mehi joth joth hai soe ||

The Divine Light is within everyone; You are that Light.

this kai chaanan sabh mehi chaanan hoe ||

Yours is that Light which shines within everyone.

Dhanasree Mahalla 1, Ang 663

As Waheguroo resides and manifests His power within everything, He also resides within us, and it is only through Him that we are living. Guru Jee says:

kaat(h) kee putharee kehaa karai bapuree khilaavanehaaro jaanai ||

What can the poor wooden puppet do? The Master Puppeteer knows everything.

jaisaa bhaekh karaavai baajeegar ouhu thaiso hee saaj aanai ||3||

As the Puppeteer dresses the puppet, so is the role the puppet plays. ||3||

Gauree Mahalla 5, Ang 206

Even though His creation may at times destruct and dissipate, Parmeshwar is still forever continuous and omnipresent. The Parmaatmaa is playful, and He plays with His creation as He wishes. Guru Jee says:

chojee maerae govi(n)dhaa chojee maerae piaariaa har prabh maeraa chojee jeeo ||

Playful is my Lord of the Universe; playful is my Beloved. My Lord God is wondrous and playful.

Gauree Mahalla 4, Ang 174

When He wants to, like a playful magician, He creates the world, and when He wants, He brings it to an end. Guru Jee says:

baajeegar dda(n)k bajaaee ||

When the magician beats his tambourine,

sabh khalak thamaasae aaee ||

everyone comes to see the show.

baajeegar svaa(n)g sakaelaa ||

When the magician winds up his show,

apanae ra(n)g ravai akaelaa ||2||

then he enjoys its play all alone. ||2||

Sorath Bhagat Kabeer Jee, Ang 655

The all-powerful Creator is all-knower and the carer of His creation. We should remember Him at all times as being ever-present with us.

This is an attempted translation of the chapter "Parmeshwar" from Katha Updesh Sagar by Gyani Bhagat Singh.
