lighting candles is an metaphor.

When Guru Hargobind singh jee accepted to goto prison for 40 days, sikh sangat was sad, it was like the light had gone out for them and darkness was all around. When Guru ji returned , it was like the light had come bak into their lives. so Everyone lighted Candles n diwas.

For me, just because something is not in our religion does not mean we can not celebrate it providing it does not go against Sikhi teachings and thoughts.
