The Sikh Federation issued the following statement to cancel the protest in LONDON for Friday 8 July. This was just one day after the tragic events in LONDON and perfectly understandable. It is quite another thing to cancel protests in other parts of the world e.g. Toronto some 5 days later. Issues such as "police resources being stretched" do not arise.

Although the final decision is clearly one for Sikhs in Toronto, Canada - we believe the protests should continue. However, they should be professioinally organised and try and highlight key issues as human right abuses. We must also think about the Sikhs languishing in Indian jails, being beaten and tortured before making any moves to cancel protests.

[see www.sikhfederation.com]

The Sikh Federation (UK) has issued the following press statement regarding the terrorist attacks this morning:

Thursday 7 July 2005

The protests planned for Friday 8 July, between 3-5pm outside the Indian High Commission have been cancelled

We regret to inform you that the peaceful protests planned for tomorrow by Sikhs outside the Indian High Commission in London regarding the Dastaar (Sikh turban) and human rights violations in India have been cancelled.

The tragic incidents of earlier this morning in London and the latest police advice leave us with no option but to cancel the protests. We apologise for any inconvenience that this will cause. As you will be well aware police resources in London are stretched and it would have been irresponsible and insensitive to allow the protests against the Indian Government to take place at this time given the circumstances.

It is hoped you will fully understand why we have reached this decision. We have also learnt that Manmohan Singh's schedule is also being changed due to the security situation. Our offer to meet with him tomorrow to get an update on the Dastaar situation and to put across our concerns about the human rights situation in India is still on the table.

We received confirmation this morning that he has received our message and our letter of an offer to meet while he is in the UK. NDTV also carried broadcasts on Indian television earlier this morning about the reasons for the protest and our willingness to meet Manmohan Singh and to enter into a dialogue about Sikh concerns.

The Sikh Federation (UK) have organised to meet the media that had already covered the protests and were hoping to film tomorrow. However, our appeal is that Sikhs heed our advice and do not travel to London as the protest has been officially cancelled. The Metropolitan Police have welcomed our responsible approach and our full support to help them in any way we can to bring the culprits of the terrorists attacks in London to justice.

The Sikh Federation (UK) has issued the following press statement regarding the terrorist attacks this morning:

We totally condemn this morning's terrorist attacks targeting innocent civilians in London. These are the acts of cowards and a challenge to the international world. Those responsible have no respect for human life. It is clear the attacks are timed to coincide with the opening of the G8 and deflecting attention away from important international issues, such as combating world poverty and protecting our environment.

We send our profound condolences to the victims and their families. Our thoughts are with those that have been injured and the families that have lost loved ones.

The Sikh community in the UK had been planning a "pro human rights" protest in central London tomorrow with the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to the UK. However, we have taken police advice and cancelled our protest as we had no wish to put a drain on police resources at this tragic time. We have offered our full support to the UK Government and the Metropolitan Police to help them in any way we can to bring the culprits of these terrorists attacks to justice.

We must unite in our efforts to tackle such acts of terrorism that are aimed at killing and maiming innocent civilians. The international community must also work together to challenge rogue states and states that have little or no respect for human rights. Today's events should strengthen our resolve to eradicate all forms of terrorism.

[Note: It has now been confirmed that the 75th anniversary of India House that was to take place today at the Indian High Commission in London and Manmohan Singh was to attend has been cancelled]

As of this moment there is know indication by the singhs in toronto that this protest is cancelled. At this moment we are still going ahead with the protest, BUT, there is a meeting at Malton gurughar tommorow evening at 6-8 and if the sangat says to cancel we will follow sangats views.

So again at this moment the protest is NOT canceled for July 12th in front of Indian consulate in toronto.

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
