Temple sword waving prompts alert

Police were called to a Sikh temple in Leicester after protesters started waving swords during elections.

Armed officers who were passing by, a dog unit and patrol cars attended the incident, involving about 40 people at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Holy Bones.

Leicestershire Police said they were present following a request by temple officials but would not confirm the number of officers who attended.

Tensions are believed to have flared over a decision regarding management.

Kulwinder Singh Johal, temple general secretary, said: "A group of about 40 men came to the temple and there was a scuffle.

"There were two police officers inside the Gurdwara and they called for back-up.

"It's a shock. It's unprecedented. I have never known anything like this.

"I pray to God it does not happen again and these people can accept the decision of the management committee."

A decision was being made at about 1130 GMT on Sunday when a 200-strong congregation was present to make a decision on who should be on the temple's governing committee.

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: "Officers worked closely with senior committee members and the event ended peacefully at 1pm. There were no arrests made.

"The police still continue to work closely with senior committee members and together with them, would appeal for peace and unity.

"However, we do treat seriously any reports of disorder. They will be dealt with accordingly and investigated thoroughly."
