Last year i heard that loads ppl died in India when they wore the Rakhriya...

I think it was like something like powder or anthrax in it n when you smell it/inhale it (as it on your hand for cuple of days).. so they died.

did ne1 else here that too..?

SO BEWARE OF THE RAKHRIYA THIS YEAR...

MOD NOTE: Edited "Lakhriya" to "Rakhriya" to ease confusion.

Rakhi is against the principles of Sikhi because a sister ties a thread on the wrist of her brother, which means that he will protect her no matter what. But doesn't this show the weakness of womanhood. In Sikhism everyone is equal and women have equal rights as men. Women wear Kirpans like men and they are expected to protect themselves. Don't you know what Mata Bhago (Bhaag Kaur) did and don't forget the sacrifice of Maharani Jindan (Jind Kaur). Women are not weak. They are strong. In Sikhi women are not expected to look upon their husbands to protect them. If that was the case then what would be the point of wearing Kirpans? Guru Gobind Singh Ji said when all other meanings are failed its your right to draw a sword. So let it be that way. How do you know your brother would really help you in danger. What if he's not there to help you or runs away. Guru Ji ordered Khalsa to practice arms and be able to protect yourselves. This applies o both men and women or Singhs and Kaurs.

the above post by akaal purakh di fauj is soooo sooooo true.

BUT

many people say that Guru Nanak Dev Ji tied one on his sister is this true??? or is it just made up to merge sikhism with hinduism???

somebody plz let me know, my dad will make me wear them on the day

Firstly it would have been Bibi Nanaki that tied it on Guroo Saahib and secondly think of it this way...Maharaj declined to wear the Jinaeoo (the hindu string worn by men) as it had no meaning, so why would Guroo Saahib tie a different piece of string to represent something just and insignificant???

I took a random shabad from SikhiToTheMax and this shabad came up, its the story behind the Janeoo by Guroo Naanak Daev Jee, so fitting! WOW!!

Shalok, First Mehl:

Make compassion the cotton, contentment the thread, modesty the knot and truth the twist.

This is the sacred thread of the soul; if you have it, then go ahead and put it on me.

It does not break, it cannot be soiled by filth, it cannot be burnt, or lost.

Blessed are those mortal beings, O Nanak, who wear such a thread around their necks.

You buy the thread for a few shells, and seated in your enclosure, you put it on.

Whispering instructions into others' ears, the Brahmin becomes a guru.

But he dies, and the sacred thread falls away, and the soul departs without it. ||1||

Think logical and we will see how great our Satguroo is!

Dhan Dhan Satguroo Sree Guroo Granth Saahib Jee Maahaaraaj!

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Copied n pasted this from sikh sites regarding Raksha Bandhan:

Regarding Raksha Bandhan : We believe that our protector is Akal Purakh and no mortal can protect us. For us rather than tying a ?dori? on a mortal seeking protection we have handed our ?dori? in the hands of Akal Purakh when we recite ? Prabh dori haath tumhaare.

Like one Sikh already said in a post before, Sikhs celebrate rakhsha bandhan ever day because they protect the weak 24 hours.

1) Raksha bandhan means the "string of protection." Do your friends know the story of Guru Nanak and the jeneau? Didn't Guru Nanak dispel the custom of tying this sacred hindu brahmin thread? Didn't he say that I should wear the string that doesn't break - the string of compassion, of love and of faith? Rakhri, or raakhee, is the same temporary string which is a ritual and means nothing.

2) Why do women tie it on men? In Sikhi, men and women are COMPLETE equals. Mata Bhag Kaur was stronger of spirit than the 40 Muktay... SHE LED THEM TO BATTLE. Why then, is a women thought to be weaker? This is incorrect mentality. Women and men are equal, and therefore nobody needs to tie special strings and anybody else for protection.

3) By tying a string on somebody, and getting money, and giving sweets, does that really prove your love, compassion and the strength of your relationship with a person? Absolutely not. This is all a material game, and Sikhs don't play that way.

4) Why do only sisters tie it on brothers? Is it not the duty of a mother to protect her son? Is it not the duty of an elder sister to protect her younger brother? Is it not the duty of a father to protect his daughter? Relationships do not mean much if they are built on KACHE DHAAGE (weak strings). A Sikh will protect anybody - anybody that needs help... even if it is a stranger on the street. In fact, there is no stranger for a Sikh. The philosohpy for Sikhs is - NO ENEMIES, NO STRANGERS. Therefore, Sikhs protect everybody, and there is no need for rakhree.

5) The ultimate proof that Rakhsa Bandhan is not necessary and Sikhs should not believe in it:

Rakhe Rakhanaar Aap Ubaarian, Gur kee pairee paa-ay, kaaj savaarian. (Sri Guru Granth Sahib)

bhul chuk maaf karnaa

Waahiguroo jee kaa khaalsaa !!! Waahiguroo jee kee fathe !!!

i dont get it wacko.gif

i've got a pic of bebe nanaki tieing a lakhri on sri guru nanak dev ji.

and theres loads more of them.

and secondly sooo many sikhs practice it.

isn't it NOT meant to signify anything religious but just the union

between a brother and sister.

and i know this has nothing to do with the topic but theres meant to be

abit of controversy with gurdwara marriage ceremonies. i've heard

some ppl say that there are cultural elements that have been included

in it and as a result has been altered? sorry for raising a totally different topic!

can someone please elaborate on and explain the above issues?

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
