AFAIK...nothing specific in black n white has been said...but i suppose it's fine...just so long as the abortion isn't for the wrong reason i.e. unwanted pregnancy due to sleeping around. BTW, this is a topic with lots of grey areas...we'll have the pro-choice and pro-life people arguing their heads off. tongue.gif

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

PRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOO LIFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Abortion is forbidden in Sikhi, as it interferes in the creative work of Waheguru - who created everything and is present in every being.

We accept that life begins at conception (one reference is found on Ang 74 of Guru jI)

So if conception has taken place, it would be a sin to destroy life and hence deliberate miscarriage or abortion is forbidden.

Vaheguruu Jee Ka Khalsa Vaheguruu Jee Kee Fateh

Abortion is forbidden, we can see this in the above post but also, because it was and still is happening, esspecially in panjab as a way of getting rid of girls. This is disgusting and tottally against Sikhi. Today people will go to extent as flying from UK to Panjab to get a scan and abortion if its a girl. this is not only against Sikhi, rehit and Gurbani but show how educated a person is to think that a girl would be a burden on there family.

A sikh is told not to have association wwith those who kill there daughters at birth. today its a shame people who call themselves "sikhs" are doing the same.

It like many things are due to the way our communitty thinks, marriage, etc that a daughter will leave, will cost to get her married. Its all more about Panjabi cutoms and ritual which we really need to get rid of and remove this stigma that a female is some how less then a man, wwhen Gurbani says she is higher.

My personal opinion is that abortion can only be considered in extreme circumstances, such as rape.....

Sikhism does not express a view one way or another about Abortion, but as some have correctly pointed out here, Sikhi respects life!

The decision for abortion is a personal one, and may be taken for many reasons e.g:

1) Deformities, genetics defects

2) Rape, or child out of wedlock

3) Unwanted pregnancy/Mistake

4) Problems or medical condition to the potential mother.

There are many reasons when abortion could be justified.

Where it aids the 5 vices e.g..

1) Wrong Sex of child, female infanticide is expressly forbidden to Sikhs (pure Egotism in wanting a son),

2) An aid to behaviour eluding to Kaam (i.e. help obsessive sexual desire)

This is not a definitive list, but Sangat should think for themselves when and where Abortion is acceptable, bearing in mind the 5 vices, and also the strong sense of Justice, Sikhi upholds. End of the day the decision is for the woman herself and she should not be put under pressure either way.

PS Sikhism does NOT have a concept of sin, so please stop using such words
