I'm always gob smacked when someone asks me that. :)

It’s a pretty simple and straight forward question, but it just stuns me LOL.

A way of a life cannot be explained, it can’t be translated. However, to get the full jist of it, you have to experience it.

As we all know, Sikhi is a way of life, and I’ve always told everyone: "even if I explained it; it would not do us justice, it has to be experienced".

Peace

When speaking of people who dont know about sikhism, dont just call them gorrey or whatever please. They can be whites, blacks, yellows, other indians, whatever. You dont have to assume the white people are the only ones who dont know jack. (sorry, somewhat of an off topic commentary)

but now to topic, I used to be the person who didnt know about sikhism. And what gave me an understanding was mool mantra. So i agree with the above, that that is what will get them to have an idea. Or you can decide to be mysterious and say "Ik... One.... there is only One"... and walk into the shadows... lol make them do their own research. hahaha (just kidding)

So what is Sikhi? How can we even attempt to define Sikhi? Can we define God? Then if Sikhi is to follow God, how could we give one definition of Sikhi? Just like people give God many names and based upon their beliefs, they “attempt” defining God but nobody can say anything for sure about God, people have many versions of Sikhi and yet nobody knows for sure which is the right path, the only way to define sikhi is to experience sikhi. And therefore aim to ultimately experience God

my two pence worth not sure if it makes sense :):

i get what your saying but a person comes up to you and gives you two minutes to explain what your all about; it is going to do no good to jump into philisophical oblivion. Yes sikhi is deep and profound as is waaheguru but most people who come up to you don't want to get into a conversation about the ultimate truth they just wanna know why you have that "thing" on your head and if you worship the cow since you are from india. Sometimes you gotta just keep it real :)

bhul chuk muaaf.

Simple, tell them the Mool Mantar and translate it in English.  The Mool mantar explains the whole concept of God in Sikhi and that is what Gorre want to know, they wanna know what God you believe in.(at least that's what I've found)

Then if they ask about the five K's well that takes about 5 minutes.....

Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh

lol true, someone asked me and I started saying other stuff and he was like, no tell me what God is for u, and I was like OK and that was all he wanted to know cos we didnt have time to discuss 5Ks.

Oh and once two Christian guys were giving out leaflets trying to convert and I was the only person in the train so they tried me :) and just asked me why sikhi and I just said equality, something Christianity dont have and they just smiled back (I was being nice though  )

Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh
