AMRITSAR: Instead of an eye-popping show of anorexic fair sex swanky models revealing their body curves and bellies while walking down the ramp, it was the turn of robust but handsome turbaned Sikhs trying to make a niche for themselves in the modelling arena which is generally predominated by shorn gentlemen.

Brimming with confidence the eleven participants of the ‘Tashan Turban Da’ show organized during the International Sikh Youth Conference on Saturday night at Khalsa College grounds termed the event as one of the much awaited opportunity for the Sikh youth aspiring to make their name in modelling.

The Sikh show had ethnic, formal and casual rounds, which was presented by young Sikh models hailing from different sections of society . These models not only wore western outfits but Indian ethnic wear like Sherwani’s and business suits too.

Harjinder Singh Gill, one of the Sikh models while talking to TNN on Saturday night said that he had full support from his family and was looking forward to making his name in modelling as a carrier.

Businessmen Harpreet Singh Bhatia who has also tried his luck in modelling said that “there used to be nothing exciting for Sikhs before the advent of Sikh modeling”. Harsimranjit Singh a BDS student and Sikh model said that beginning of Sikh modelling has at least broken the myth that Sikhs were not handsome.

Bhai Baldeep Singh 13th generation exponent of Gurbani who had come to witness the show opined that more stress should have been laid on traditional wears than western outfits. He said “peo

ple feel pride in wearing bermuda’s introduced by foreigners then why not Kaschiara (underwear) - a designer wear of Sikhs”

However Rubin Singh richest youngest Sikh from UK said that there was no harm in wearing any dress including western wears. He said more such events should be organized for the worldwide movement of Sikhs and promotion of Sikh youth.

Gurbachan Singh Bachan, former secretary of Shiromnai Gurdwara Pabrandhak Committee (SGPC) appreciated the efforts for introducing Sikhs into modelling . “The efforts would check the practice of cutting of hair and beard by Sikh youth who intended to go into modelling since these youth have now an example before them that Sikhs are handsome and fit as models”.

Jaswinder Singh Advocate, conference director asked the Sikh youth to join their organization Akal Purakh Ki Fauj which was working for the promotion of Sikhism in the world and holding such events.

Although, I am against all forms of modeling as I think it is superficial. But this might not be a bad idea. This will certainly make Sikhs feel better because of decades of Bollywood movies portraying Sardars as jokers, not to mention those annoying Sardar Jee jokes.

. I think Sikh models is a wrong thing to do, first off they obbviously trim and it will go no where in the United States. Second off it wont even reach the mainstream of Indian music and movie industry.

If people say Sikh Models are a good way of protraying good sardars.........then why are they trimming. Isnt that conterdicting? Or maybe these models have a diffrent purpose other then their religion.
