Yes, I agree, The Sikh Federation (UK) was the main inspiration behind this event and it has given hope to all the Singhs in jails!

I think Bhai Amrik Singh Jee Gill, Bhai Dabinderjit Singh Jee...etc and ALL the other members, the other organisers including around the world need to be congradulated on the success of this event and the past events. The struggle is not over (hopefully the one for Bhai Davinderpal Singh Bhuller is), and I KNOW the Federation will always continue to peacefully fight for our just rights!

WORLDWIDE CANDLE LIGHT VIGILS - FOLLOW UP ACTION

The Sikh Federation (UK) urges Sikhs throughout the UK to write, email, fax and ring their local MP and ask him/her to sign Early Day Motions 1394 and 1383 (reproduced below). MPs should also be asked to write to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office urging it to take relevant actions in conjunction with the German Government and other members of the European Union in the case of Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar. The EDMs will remain open until November 2006.

Around 150 MPs (Government Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries) are unable to sign EDMs due to Parliamentary protocol. However, they should be asked to write to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office urging them to take actions. In all cases ask your MP to copy you all correspondence with the Foreign Office.

It should be possible for Sikhs in Canada, USA and other countries to approach politicians in the countries where they live and urge their respective Governments to exert pressure on the Indian authorities. If we all did this where we live a considerable amount of pressure could be exerted.

A Written Declaration is also to be tabled in the European Parliament in February with regards to Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar. This will enable Sikhs in the 25 Member States to urge MEPs to sign the Written Declaration when it is released. The Written Declaration will only be available to sign by MEPs for 90 days. MEPs should also be encouraged to write to their national governments and the Indian authorities.

EDM 1394 - PROFESSOR DAVINDERPAL SINGH BHULLAR

That this House urges the President of India to intervene in the case of Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, who was deported from Germany in 1995 contrary to Article 3 of the European Human Rights Convention and who has been facing a sentence of death in India since 2001, despite the serious doubts expressed by many, including human rights bodies and the most senior judge on the bench in his trial, about the manner in which his conviction was obtained including the use of torture; and urges the United Kingdom Government to do all it can in conjunction with the German Government and the European Union in making representations to the Indian Government to secure justice in this case.

The following 12 MPs signed this motion in the first week. Sikhs are urged to contact their MP to get them to sign as soon as possible.

From: SikhEKTA@yahoogroups.com [mailto:SikhEKTA@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Balvinder Saund

Sent: Saturday, February 11, 2006 3:07 AM

Subject: [sikhEKTA] Death Penalty in India

WJKK WJKF to all Sikh brothers and sisters,

Recently, a group of women from the Sikh Women's Alliance and I joined the candlelight vigil in Ilford Town Centre and following this vigil, I wrote to my local M.P., Mike Gapes on the issue of death penalty and the case of Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar and the treatment of Sikhs in Uttaranchal. Mike Gapes is the Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee currently and I have been the Secretary of his Ilford South Constituency for the past three years.

Mike Gapes has today forwarded a reply from Kim Howells, the Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in response to my representations, and these are set out below for your information:

'Thank you for your letter of 9th January to the Foreign Secretary on behalf of your constituent Balvinder Kaur Saund, Chairperson of Sikh Women's Alliance about the case of Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar and the treatment of Sikhs in India. I am replying as Minister responsible for our relations with India.

We are aware of the case of Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, and share concerns over the use of the death penalty in India. The UK opposes capital punishment in all circumstances. The UK together with EU partners calls upon all states to abolish the death penalty. India's constitution only allows for the death penalty in the 'rarest of rare cases'. In conjunction with the EU, we have marked India about their use of the death penalty, most recently in June 2004, and we will continue to use every appropriate opportunity to press for its abolition. We will continue to monitor this case closely.

We also share Mrs. Saund's concern over religious intolerance and minority discrimination in some parts of India. She mentions specifically reports about the alleged racial discrimination and abuse of human rights of Sikhs living in Uttaranchal.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines the rights of everyone to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. The U.K. supports this right in international fora and in individual cases where it arises. We condemn all instances where individuals are persecuted because of their faith or belief, wherever they happen and whatever the religion of the individual or group concerned.

Our High Commission in New Delhi continues to monitor issues of religious freedom in India. Our staff makes regular calls to Indian authorities flagging up our concern about incidents of religious intolerance. We will continue to insist that the right to freedom of religion is upheld, and that those responsible for attacks against people on grounds of their religion are brought to justice. In this context, we welcomed the comments made by the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in his speech at the National Communal Harmony Award event in New Delhi on 2 August 2005, when he said, 'No religion supports violence. Those who resort to violence in the name of religion are doing a disservice to their faith and to humanity. Tolerance is an important lesson of all religions.' Last August, Prime Minister Singh also addressed the first meeting of the National Integration Council for 13 years (in itself of importance). He said, ’...extremism of any form, based on any divisive ideology, cannot be tolerated in any civilised, democratic society....' and later reinforced his commitment stating '...the importance of communal harmony, I think, needs no reiteration. It is the 'sine qua non' of our survival as a civilised society...’

Yours sincerely,

KIM HOWELLS,

Minister of State,

Foreign and Commonwealth Office,

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
