Sikh Conference announces formation of 'Darbar-e-Khalsa'

Fatehgarh Sahib, Feb 26 (UNI) An organisation, 'Darbar-e-Khalsa' will be set up to guide the Sikh community and create social, religious, political and economic awareness among Sikhs.

This decision was announced during the 'Virsa Sambhal Vishav Sikh Sammelan' held at Sirhind under the patronage of Damadami Taksal and Sant Samaj.

'Darbar-e-Khalsa will comprise of Sikh scholars who will function under the patronage of a Chairman. Former Akal Takht Jathedar Jasbir Singh Rode will be the co-ordinator for setting up this organisation.

'The announcement of the formation of the 'Darbar-e-Khalsa will be made on the occasion of Baisakhi.

A member of the 'Darbar-e-Khalsa' will not contest in any election and this organisation would be purely dedicated for the betterment of the Sikh community.

The gathering at the Sammelan was impressive with representatives of Sant Samaj and Damdami Taksal making their presence felt.

There was no direct criticism of any political leader including Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Parkash Singh Badal, who did not attend the conference. The Congress was criticised on various fronts and at one point the SAD leadership also came under attack on the issue of ineffective debate on terrorism in Punjab Assembly session.

Mostly social issues related with Sikhs were discussed during the function. The issue of separate Calendar for the Sikhs was also raised in the function.

During the sammelan, representatives of Sant Samaj stressed that all out efforts should be made to bring about improvement in the social, economical, educational and religious spheres to make the Sikhs prosperous. A call was also given to Sikh leaders to sink their petty individual differences and to join hands for the cause of Sikhism.

While addressing the gathering Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Khalsa said the function was not organized for criticising any individual or group. The function was held to discuss challenges faced by the Sikh community, he said.

He said the Sammelan was a way to check deterioration in Sikh values and principles and to make efforts to maintain their separate identity. The Taksal chief suuegsted that to make Sikhism popular a Sikh TV channel should be started .

Says it all about this event, the Khalsa-e-darbar and that too under the Jathedari of the sarkari Rode. Is there a lack of Sikh organisations as it is ?

How is Rode going to steer this organisation ? His past shows he really does not have a clue about anything. When he became Jathedar of the Akal Takht he forgot how Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Ji had treated the issue of reading Raagmala at the Siri Akal Takht Sahib and took it on himself to start the reading of Raagmala. I do not want to start a Raagmala debate but this Rode did not even have respect for the past decision of Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Ji. Someone he claims to respect.

This whole event has proved to be a damp squib. I did not expect much from it but this has turned the tide.

>>The Congress was criticised on various fronts and at one point the SAD leadership also came under attack on the issue of ineffective debate on terrorism in Punjab Assembly session.

This must have been great. I wonder if anyone questioned Rode's role in the troubles and his links to the GOI. No good attacking the SAD when you have sarkari people sitting at the front at the conference. They should sort their own house out before criticising others.

Worried Sikhs want end to foeticide

- By Asit Jolly

Fatehgarh Sahib, Feb. 26: Sikhs attending the World Sikh Heritage, or Virasat, Conference in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib township on Sunday unanimously called for end to the "evil practice of female foeticide" which has prevented the birth of thousands of girl children and dangerously skewed sex ratios in Punjab. The state has not only reported the lowest adult male-female sex ratio in India (2001 Census), but even lower child sex ratio has been documented in certain districts, including Fatehgarh.

Significantly, among the 19 resolutions adopted at the mammoth gathering of Sikhs on Sunday, the urgent call for an end to the age-old practice of killing girls before birth read: "We are most concerned that the evil practice of female foeticide has become common amongst many Sikhs despite that the Sikh faith forbids all baptised Sikhs from maintaining any contact with a kudimaar (girl child killer). Every Sikh must shun such evil practices," said resolution number eleven.

Sponsored by the Damdami Taksal, a Sikh seminary once headed by the separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the conference was addressed by scores of Punjab-based religious leaders from the self-styled Sant Samaj and included many hardline Sikh politicians closely aligned to Bhindranwale’s separatist ideology.

Notably, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, which claims to be the only representative body responsible for Sikh religious affairs, not only went completely unrepresented at the event but its leaders also came in for sharp criticism for buckling under political pressure from former Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal and the mainstream Shiromani Akali Dal.

And lending a "global" status to the one-day event, the participants included more than a hundred representatives of the Sikh communities in the UK, USA and Canada. Jaspreet Kaur, a functionary of the UK-based Sikh Community and Youth Services has specially flown in from Nottingham.

One of the organisers, former Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly Ravi Inder Singh said, "The central objective of the conference is to try and provide a fresh impetus and direction to the spread of Sikhism across the world by helping common devotees, politicians and young people revisit the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh."

Interestingly, the gathering also called for a speeding up of the ongoing peace process between Pakistan and India.

Resolution number nine: "We feel the improvement in India-Pakistan relations is a very welcome development. These relations must be speeded up with time. The two nations have a shared culture and history. The Indian government must recognise its responsibility to create conditions for visa-free travel to and from Pakistan so that Sikhs are no longer denied access to their historic places of worship (in Pakistan). Also, the opening of trade ties will usher in a new phase of economic and cultural prosperity in both Punjabs," was tellingly greeted with lusty cries of "Jo Bole So Nihal!" and a unanimous raising of a multitude of hands.

Other resolutions adopted at the conference reiterated the familiar criticism of the Indian government for continuing to follow policies unfair to Sikhs. The Indian Army attack on the Golden Temple in 1984, the anti-Sikh riots and the continuing incarceration of many Sikhs accused of terrorist activity was repeatedly voiced from the dais which had a huge portrait of Bhindranwale and a picture of the Golden Temple as its imposing backdrop.

While clearly signalling that there is still considerable public anguish over issues like Operation Bluestar and the Delhi riots, the mood of the huge gathering of common Sikhs at Fatehgarh Sahib town could also spell some trouble mainstream Sikh political parties like the Shiromani Akali Dal-Badal, which was clearly the main focus of most of the criticism at the conference.

Sikhs against female foeticide

Hindustan Times - Indo-Asian News Service

Chandigarh, February 26, 2006

A convention of World Sikh Heritage at Punjab's religious town of Fatehgarh Sahib Sunday adopted a resolution calling upon all Sikhs to shun the practice of female foeticide and consumption of drugs.

The convention was organised by Damdami Taksal, a separatist Sikh religious sect that was once headed by late Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Thousands of Sikhs from across Punjab and other states and a few hundred from the US, Britain and other countries attended the convention.

The resolution against female foeticide pointed out that the "evil practice" had become common even among Sikhs though it was forbidden in the Sikh faith.

The call against female foeticide came a day after the state government announced that the sex ratio had improved in the last five years.

The government claimed that in the age group of zero to six years, the number of girls had gone up to 817 to 1,000 males compared to a low sex ratio of 798 girls per 1,000 males recorded in the 2001 census.

Punjab has one of the lowest sex ratios in the country with three of its 17 districts being at the bottom among all 600 districts in India.

The convention also demanded that India and Pakistan should further improve ties so that people from both countries could move in a visa-free regime.

Shiromani Akali Dal leaders and the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee - the "mini parliament" of Sikhs that manages Sikh shrines across Punjab - came in for criticism at the convention.

first of all, if u gonna talk crap bout jasbir singh, get off the net, either go to his face and jus confront him

jus see if he can answer ure questions

or ask some people who actually knew him

but please dont talk crap over the net

and i aint even gonna waste time doin this over the net

as for dhumma

jhe aint jathedar of taksal

no one has given him tha authority, at least no one with the right to give him tha power has given him it

aand if taksal was to have another mukhee, im sure someone like dhumma who has been accused of swearing at baba je before he was jathedar wud become one

dhumma is a fake

bhula chuka maf

153434[/snapback]

I guess the truth hurts. As for saying it to his face whats he going to do ? What has he done about what MK Dhar wrote about him ? Nothing, he knows it is true.

If Rode is confident it is lies tell him to undergo a lie detector test. At the same time you are asking him about his links with the GOI you may want to question him about his imaginary successful business ventures which have given him a good lifestyle.

Whilst the sons and doughters of Shaheed Singh live in absolute poverty this Rode lives the life they can only dream about. The qurbani of their mothers and fathers is forgotten

He can not answer any questions and no one believes him because he is so tainted.

It is funny how you can have a go at Dhumma but despite all the proof out there on Rode you think he is some sort of angel.

As for getting off the net. Who do you think you are telling others to get off the net ? Is the net your private domain where only you can vent your anger against Dhumma ?
