FCAD ANNOUNCEMENTS

Journalism school invites to this year's Atkinson Lecture, featuring Kim Bolan

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the School of Journalism, I'd like to invite you to this year's Atkinson Lecture, featuring Kim Bolan. She will speak at Ryerson University on Tuesday, February 14 at 1:30 p.m.

Kim has been a reporter for The Vancouver Sun since 1984. From the start of her career, she has focused on the Indo-Canadian community in Vancouver, and her coverage has led to critical breaks in the case of the 1985 bombing of an Air India jet. Her coverage also led to a police investigation of a local independent school which was being controlled by several suspects in the bombing, Kim has also covered minority, women's, education, and social services issues. She has won and been shortlisted for over fifteen major national and international journalism awards, including the Courage in Journalism Award in 1999 for her continuing coverage of the Air-India story, while under death threats. Recently, she released her book Loss of Faith: How the Air-India Bombers Got Away With Murder.

Kim's lecture is called "Guerilla Journalism". It will focus on the challenges of persevering with an important story even when there is no editorial or public appetite. Kim says her most significant example is the Air India story, but that there are many other examples in Canadian journalism where the persistence of reporters has led to the truth coming out and changes being made, whether it is a new government policy, an inquiry or charges.

The lecture will take place in the Eaton Lecture Theatre, in RCC 204, on the second floor of the Rogers Communications Centre. Kim will lecture for approximately one hour and then we'll throw the floor open to questions and discussion. The building is at 80 Gould Street, on the northeast corner of Gould and Church. Just go in the front door, on Gould, turn right, go up the stairs, then turn to your right again and follow the signs to room 204. There will be an informal reception, following the lecture. If you have a class at that time, and feel this would be of interest to your students, do bring them.

RSVP to Adrian Wang at 416-979-5319. If you don't get a chance to reply, and decide to attend at the last minute, you're more than welcome.

The Atkinson lecture series is made possible by a grant from the Atkinson Charitable Foundation, established in memory of Joseph Atkinson, late publisher of the Toronto Star.

Hope to see you at the lecture!

Best regards,

Marsha Barber

Perhaps you guys could question her during the lecture with some specific questions and see her reaction.

1. Throughout your Air India coverage, you have have often come down hard on Sikh Freedom Fighters (or in words you're more comfortable using, terrorists and separatists). Do you think journalists should have an obligation to present both sides of an issue, regardles of their personal bias?

2. Do you think it's fair to Sikhs who have hopes for a soverign Sikh state, that their side of the story is never presented?

3. Is it right for visible Sikhs to blame certain journalists, like yourself, for the prejudice they may face in soceity for holding separatists views?

4. Can we hold you resposible for the comments of your reading audience who mistake any visible Sikh as being a supporter of the accused Air India bombers?

5. Should it not be your responsiblity to highlight the difference between being supporters of a Sikh homeland and being supporters of terrorists?

6. Is there a reason why your style of sensational journalism is aimed at a very visible minority only? And do you think you should be held accountable for any misconceptions that the general masses may aquire becasue of your particular style of journalism?

Just some for starters...

God, I wish I was in Toronto to see her lecture.

I would love to see a group of Singhs just constantly interrupt her with intelligent, debatable questions. Bet it will raise a few eyebrows form the academic audience.

Maybe you can ask her how she feels about making a career out of exploiting a minority group through particular issues, such as violence, rather than taking the advantage of understanding the minority group through her journalism. From all the work she has done she has only bad mouthed Sikhs. For instance, she attended a Nagar Kirtan in Surrey, and there, people were shouting, Khalistan Zinabad, and she reported that was a “terrorist slogan”. Do you do your research before you report? Where do your ethics of journalism play in this part? Why do you feel it is necessary to exploit a minority group through there problems. Furthermore, your recent reporting on “Indo Canadian Gang Violence” was blown out of proportion and has made it worse for the community. Honestly, you have made our issues, and problems into a bankable industry. As well, maybe you can also ask why she feels it is necessary that tax payers of B.C. to pay for her security when she herself put her security in risk. Maybe if you stopped falsely accusing people, people wouldn’t be trying to kill her. :)
