Capped with a big golden dome,

proudly erected in the heart of a miserly town,

flagship of a pitful squadron,

from the top of its bronze walls muffles the big temple

murmurs of coloured believers

and complaints of the martyrs of its faith.

Amritsar!

Gone is meditation time,

stopped are these religious moanings,

suppressed usual psalms

covering your cold obstinacy.

Open is the road for confrontations

fights, massacres of their faith.

Amritsar

Out of the fiery mouths of cannon

spitting the darkest intolerance towards you

one day shall the clouds of hope go

hoaxing liturgical fabric for ever.

Hope and life of a sickly people

keep forgiveness in your conch

for the foe (who is) thousand times too many

who tramples on your faithful platonic lovers.

And Yet...

Your parkarma has been washed by the blood of martyrs,

Your walls have been painted by the bullets of the oppressor,

Cannons have roared at your very door,

Your waters have been littered by flesh and bone.

Time and time again, tyrants and fools have tried to erase you.

Still, the Nishan Sahib flies,

Still the Guru Granth Sahib occupies its throne,

Still the Akal Thakat asserts its presence,

Still Sikhs take amrit by the millions there,

Still Langar is served there.

The sparrows fought like hawks for your sanctity.

The deer became lions and hunted the hyenas as their prey.

The cow transformed into the bull and charged its enemies to death.

The low became the high, the peasants became the kings and queens.

Who exists to erase that power which uses blood and Gurbani as its weapons?
