Yeah it is the message but singing Gurbani is different than singing anyother type of religious topics/words etc. Gurbani Raag means more because it is from the Gurus mouth so we continue and echo yet amplify the message into eternity.and then theres just singing.

it is from the gurus mouth... the message, and that all that really matters. The language or script is just a small detail, we should focus on the message above all.

Kirtan in punjabi/gurmakhi sounds like static to me

Here you are saying the Gurus bani straight sounds like static. Whoa that is an anti-panthic statement. So you say you have zero intention of learning the Gurmukhi script? How can that work. You will never get to recite from SGGS.

How can you say these things about what language{s} is in SGGS??????

Next your gonna say you are starting a sangat that has a 4 volume SGGS in english as the installed Guru.

Snatam Kaur sounds good singing bani and then she sings songs.{there is a difference}

Actually shell be here in Sac next week, and Im gonna go see her jatha. I wonder how much she will sing in original Bani language or mostly English?

:TH: Thats what I think too, but lionchild doesnt want to learn how to recite banis in Gurmukhi. Thats like making your 4 speed car only run on 2 gears, first and second gear, and having no over drive

If you want to learn Sikhi please dont take lionchilds route, he is trying to drive in a place where he cant read the road signs so how can he get where he wants?

look Gurmukhi

Lol... 400 years of religious inbreeding and thsi is what we get.. people who are afraid to allow anyone else with different learnign style to get invlolved with sikhi. Heck, even converts like PSK have been thought to believe that thair own language and culture is something to be ashamed of. And if anyone tries to learn differently, we are called anti-panthic or similar.

Who change anything, PSK, KG1... did i say in any of my posts to change it? no i didn't, you are puting those words in my mouth. And PSK, i challenge you to listen to any other language other than punjabi/english and tell me what you hear - can you understnad it? Would you be able to listen to it and not get bored or confused? or would you jsut blindly except it as the "norm" as for static, you will soon find out it will become boreing and tireing. :D

Converts don't convert into punjabi culture... we convert into sikhi way of life. We can use any language to talk to god, as he is creator of all things and understand everything.

I personally ask you PSK, if you can somehow refute that statement? find a Guru granth sahib ji quote while your at it too.

You jokes is funny... not all cars have 4 speeds and smae use, and i would demand signs in other languages for other nationalities.... of course, that would require a little extra work and not learning your style. rolleyes.gif

VJKK VJKF!

Would like to say, Guru Ji gave us gurbani to read so we would understand how the world was supposed to be lived in, You get more raas from reading gurbani then actually gettin the english translations. A white woman who studied the sikh language stated that if the world was using panjabi, we woudl of been using computers hundreds of years ago! English translations dnt even come close to how the gurbani has been stated, The english translations are just there to guide us.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
