A SIKH WAY OF LIFE

PRACTISE WHAT YOU PREACH

::Presented by the Derby Sikh Society::

-MAIN ANNUAL EVENT REPORT-

An interactive talk by a local Derby inspirational speaker, Bhai Amar Deep Singh of the Satnaam Network was hosted by the University of Derby Sikh Society as part of the East Midlands Sikhi Week last week. This was followed by a stunning Gatka display by Ustaad Harjinder Singh of the Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Gatka Akhara.

"There is physical science, but Gurbaani is beyond that, it is super science" said Bhai Amar Deep Singh when introducing his talk after an 'Ardaas". He went on to say, "Gurbani has been blessed to humanity by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the form of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, it excels all the available science & technology in the world".

Even Einstein once said in 1941, "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science". Bhai Amar Deep Singh enlightened those present that, "Einstein became increasingly God orientated in his latter years at Princeton University USA, his word 'mysterious' was certainly referring to God".

A local Derby speaker, who hosts weekly forums at the local Derby Gurdwara Saahib, Bhai Amar Deep Singh is well-known to have inspired many youths to adopt the Sikh physical image and practise the faith. By converging deep into the philosophies of Sikhism in context to the chosen topic, mixed with amusing comments during the talk, and the use of interactive projected presentation, Bhai Amar Deep Singh captivated the audience throughout the event.

Gatka, the Sikh Martial Art, performed by Master Ustaad Harjinder Singh of the Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Gatka Akhara attracted many university youth in the past to attend Sikh Society meetings and gain knowledge of the faith. Brought back by high member demand, the demonstration performed this year was just as fine, captivating the eyes of those present to the display area.

Present at the event, to support and encourage the Sikh Youth, were the chief sponsors and advisers to the Sikh Society, the Sikh Federation UK (Derby) alongside with its Local Executive Council. The Sikh Society's committee were honoured to have in attendance its Chairman, Bhai Gurmel Singh, who read a magnificently written inspiring poem titled, "Waheguru is my best friend", that was well-received with a 'Jakaara', a Sikh war cry of victory or exultation. Bhai Saahib Jee presented the guest speaker Bhai Amar Deep Singh, the Gatka Akhara Ustaad Bhai Harjinder Singh and current President of the Sikh Society Manrupe Singh with exclusive Clock Radios uniquely embedded with the Sikh Federation (UK) emblem. Bhai Gurmel Singh finished off by introducing the Sikh Federation (UK) annual highlights booklet 2005-2006 consisting of the immense work done by the first and only Sikh Political Party in the UK. Copies were later distributed to all present.

The Derby Multi-Faith Centre was chosen as the venue for its excellence in local interfaith dialogue. It attracted a more diverse range of communities to attend, with Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Jewish members present. A high-ranking spokesperson present from the centre said, "This is perhaps the most dramatic showing we have hosted in many years; it is excellent your turnout has excelled what you had expected and the society has been escalating in size over the last two years". She was given a copy of the Sikh Federation (UK) highlights 2005-2006 booklet and guided through each page to discuss the motive behind the work. The aims of the organisation were discussed and the reasons for an independent Sikh state examined. It was agreed that the centre would distribute copies of the highlights booklet and display literature informing people of the importance of such organisations, as well as the significance of an independent Sikh state.

The Administrative Society Co-ordinator and Spokesman, Bhai Amarjit Singh, concluded the main annual event by setting out the new established aims and unique approach of the society. "We endeavour to organise events and talks by guest speakers fortnightly, which you have most likely become aware of this academic year", he notified those present. "In addition to this, with Maharaaj Jee's grace, the society has now been operating four days a week with over ten different groups, consisting not only of Sikhs, but a diverse group of other communities who have learnt, and can learn more about the Sikh religion in their own personalised time" he said. Bhai Amarjit Singh went on to say, "Due to member suggestions given today, the society will operate on a fifth day that will consist of an open forum to logically debate and discuss Sikh issues".

The University of Derby Sikh Society would like to thank the Sikh Federation UK (Derby) and its Chairman Bhai Gurmel Singh for their continuous support to the Derby Sikh Society.
