Militant Singhs And Punjabi Culture

I just wanted 2 know what is up with Militant Singhs against people like me Embracing my Punjabi Heretage. Such as singing Boliyan, Playing Dhol, Tumbi, Baja, algogey etc. Militant Singhs have always come upto me and said "You shouldn't be doing that"and have NEVER EVER given me a reason why.

Ill give you a little insight to what i do. I am an 18 year old, Birmingham Based musician. I play Dhol, Dholak, Baja, Tumbi, Guitar and Drum Kit. I have always loved Punjabi Lok Geet. I am proud of my families military background. And i embrace both my Culture (punjabi) and my Religion(Sikhi).

Now, why do 99% of people that i have met disagree with what i do? i don't see anything wrong in what i am doing. My parents and grandparents are proud of hat i am doing.....so why can't the rest of the Sikh community be prud that a Sardar is performing with some of the greatest musicians.

Its got to the point where 1 militant Singh came up 2 me and said "You are no longer a child of Sikhi...you're a Marasi". After geting a bit physical he knew I wasnt 1 of those easily brainwashed youngsters who believe that punjabi culture is pure evil. See now i do see my self as a marasi.. because my life is dedicated to music...but the wy that singh ment it was like sayin i am no longer a Singh because i lovePunjabi culture,im sorry but i couldn't live my life without my punabi culture.i dont think people understand that sikhi isnt their culture...itts only part of their culture, punjabi culture has to ft into their life somehwhere but they dont allow it to.what s wrong wit punjabi culture..why do people find it evil.why does the comunity have a problem with a sardar embracing his punjabi hertigate that flows though his veins?..someone please let me know what is wrong with the militant brainwashed community because there is nothing wrong in what i am doing.

Uhh i think u came on the wrong forum buddy, if u expect Sikhs to accept your kanjar culture that u call punjabi culture then youre highly mistaken.

Punjabi culture isnt boliyan, it isnt punjabi music and it isnt bhangra, punjabi culture is the history of punjab, the language of punjab and the amazing stories of the people who lived in punjab. You wanna learn about punjabi culture learn about the raj of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, learn about Udham Singh. learn about the great poets and scholars who were from punjab, learn about bulleh shah or the invasion of Alexandra the great.

And whats with this whole "militant singh" concept u got going? I think most of punjabi music is garbage, i dont walk around with a freakin ak47 strapped around me.

As for dancing, there is one true way to dance, where you dance not for yourself, but in the defense of others.

Right now..i know my history of punjab...and i dont care if people dont like punjabi music, the reason i made this topic is to find out. WHY people have a problem with a sardar doin so called "marasi" thing, eg sing boliyan, play dhol etc.

Narinder ji think u misundestood why i posted this... i wasnt looking for an arguement..i wanted 2 know why.

And when i say militant singh i meant people who have been brainwashed to the degree that they cant believe anything else other than what they have been "programmed" 2 believe.

Any music or dance that incite lustful thinking in one's mind is against Sikhi but in my personal opinion traditional Punjabi bhangra and giddha are totally fine and not against Sikhi. Punjabi women used to do giddha within the family or during month of Savan. Men did bhangra during Vaisakhi. This was not done to impress other sexes or for lustful reasons. So I think as long as we stick to the tradition dance and music is acceptable but once we get into today's modern lustful type music, songs and dance then there is no doubt that such things are morally wrong. I don't know who the "militant singhs" are and how you know if they really are what you claim but people should have some reasons to justify their acts. I personally like many things about traditional Punjabi culture that are slowly disappearing. You have not explained what activities you are really doing and what kind of songs or boliyan you are singing. There have been many topics on bhangra and giddha so do a search and see if you find anything useful.

dont u dare call that kanjar culture. U people have any idea whats punjab is made off. its not about khalistan everytime ok. tusi loka neh sada punjabi virsa u gand bana dita, uk vich teh canada varga desha vich ja ke. U people made the punjabi virsa of bhangra, bolia, the hanging out on village streets, playing with friends, a relationship of a brother and a sister a joke. its all in ruin now because people like u made it into a kanjar culture. people in countries like usa,uk and cnada goto punjab wearing gold and showing off, saday jatta deh munda patta janda. Its like alot of village youth in p[unjab when they see gold chains and wallets full of money but in reality the youth in punjab doesn't know u have to work like a slave to earn that much money instead study in punjab and keep their religion and culture alive. most kids in villages are wanting to come abroad to make dollars so they can be rich. they are gettin haircuts because of that and u callin that bhangra a kanjar culture. Kanjars are those who goto punjab and show off their money and never tell the truth to their family or friends. They are the ones who are killing our virsa.

Woah, if theres one thing that will never change in punjabis its their temper! You completely misunderstood me veerji, the culture ur talking about is the true punjabi culture, but there are people going around saying drinking and talking about caste is punjabi culture, they've hijacked our mahan virsa, thats what i was talking about. Our virsa is our heritage and our values as people of punjab, not bhangra and wearing dumb bhangra clown outfits, not that theres anything wrong with that, its just a small part of the broader term "punjabi". We cant deny the existence of punjabi dance and music, but we also should remember that it has become the most important thing to do with being punjabi. When non-punjabis think of punjab they think of the music and dance, nothing more. Punjabi culture as well as indian culture as whole is so diverse and broad, we need to free it from the shackles of commercialism and educate the masses.

And SardarDholi veerji, there is nothing wrong with dancing or playing instruments, and i for one am no one to criticize u, im a biggest moorakh u will ever meet. But there are sikhs out there who chose not to dance or listen to bhangra, and we should accept that. Dont listen to what others tell u to do, but also dont categorize sikhs who dont agree with u into "militants".

Only thing i don't like about the 'Panjabi Culture' is the drinking of liquor and feasting of meat - Not to mention the horrendous earings and large Khande necklaces freshies wear here in England. Makes me cringe like you wouldn't believe. Then there is the turkha cologne they wear.....
