Hey guys thanks for the civilized replies. I honestly thought I was going to get ripped apart on here. I don't mind people disagreeing, thats what lifes about I just can't stand the immature people who like to throw insults and what not if they dissagree. Well that hasn't happened yet so I'm happy.

As for S133k_s1kh, To answer your questions. I'm not an expert in Shastar vidiya or even Gatka. I love playing gatka cause its a fun way to get excercise. The fencing part is the best. Anyways I believe there is one person who says he knows the actual art. And hes the only one living today that knows it (thats what HE says). Hes from U.K. And these are the nihungs i'm referring to. However I'm not sure if it is the real marital or not because i don't know much about Shastar vidiya. But i'm not saying its not either. Well you might be thinking wow thats wicked one person knows it and hes teaching in U.K. But all i'm going to say is his views are very conterversial on a lot of subjects. In fact I don't agree with anything he says aside fromt he shastar vidiya part. I'm not attacking his character. I never met the guy. All i'm saying is if you don't agree with someones beliefs then its hard to learn from them cause thats what they gonna push on you. I would love to learn from them and judge for myself if it is the real art. From what I've seen it looks pretty deadly. But I don't agree with what they say on a number of very important issues in the panth.

Anyways from my limted knowledge Gatka is a show art. A really really watered down version of the real thing. And shastar vidiya is the art Guru ji gave us. A complete art where breathing technique, many pentras, ways to defend ways to attack with many various weapons is taught. It is a complete martial art.

At this point I want to say something about Hardkaurwarriorz post. I'm glad you agree with me. However you said that we shouldn't look down on anything the guru has given us. Gurmukh pyari I would never do that, I think you misunderstood what i said. I have not stated that gatka is a martial arts passed down to us by our gurus and it is ineffective. How could anything given to us by our gurus be less then perfect. I just want to clarify my statement is that Gatka is not the original martial art passed down to us by our Gurus. And this just my opinion because i have studied other martial arts and the amount of detail that goes into show martial arts let alone real martial are way more then gatka. I mean u said if u have a dang then you would be effective because of what they teach you in gatka. I will go one step further and say even if you had a dang or a gatka stick you wouldn't be even close to effective against a true practioner of a deadly martial art. Even if that guy had nothing in his hands. Because none of my gatka teachers ever told me how to swing effectivly or how to use my hips or what are the kill spots iwth a lathi. All i was taught was the pattern.

So what i'm trying to say is that Whatever Guru ji has passed down to us is perfect, and shastar vidiya is perfect. My statement is that gatka is an extremely watered down version of shastar vidiya.

The difference between both. Gatka teaches you how to swing a sword around really fancy so you look super deadly. and do patterns with kartars and shields. Also teaches u how to fence on a point system, which is my favourite part. Which is kool. However Gatka only has one penthra mool panthra. penthra means footwork. And footwork is not stressed to much in gatka. Any martial art always stresses footwork above every and anythign else. You need to have the roots strong before the tree can be strong. I've seen teachers teach penthra for a day and let kids grab sotis. Because there is nothing else to teach in gatka (footwork wise). However any marital artist will tell you, u have to train at least a few years before you can even touch a weapon. In gatka you can get a weapon the second or third day. And the weapons aren't realistic. You have swords which are flimsy and really dull. Where as in a real martial art you learn with a wooden version of the weapon first and gradually over time maybe years get to use the real version. Gatka you go straight to the flimsy sword and never move up. Also kill spots and how to actually use a sword are never taught. Pressure points breaking bones, different types of weapons and what each weapon can do and what its strengths and weaknesses are are not taught.

Basically most akharas when you watch ppl do gatka thats pretty much all they know. They don't know anything more then what they are showing you. That has been my experience. There might be other types of akharas out there however i'm not aware of any of them.

As for your comment on are bibiya strong? LOL. In muy thai kick-boxing i met bibiya who could take me out in a fight pretty quick when i first started off. And i'm six foot five. The person in question is the infamous Nihang Niddar Singh, and from his findings he is probably the last person who knows the full Khalsa Jang Vidiya. He learnt from a great warrior named Akali Mohinder Singh who has now done their charai.

Niddar Singh has stayed in Budha Dal and interviewed Puratan Babeh such as Baba Raam Singh, and Baba Ranjit Singh who had technical knowledge of Jang Vidiya, but they themselves have now also done their charai.

Due to people being lazy, and not putting in the effort to learn such arts, the old babeh who possessed the knowledge have passed away, and there is no one else to pass it on, in just one generation hundreds of years of gyaan has been lost.

Within times of peace people lose the "kadar" for fighting arts, with the introduction of guns the focus on hand to hand, blades and weapons arts have declined immensly amongst the nihang dals. Niddar Singh has interviewed some Nihangs who have said that "whats the use of learning how to use a sword, in these days its "ungli di vidiya", ie, pulling a trigger.

It took Guru Hargobind Sahib 15 years to train their armies, and that was to battlefield level, this level is extremely high, something that cannot even be contemplated by the average martial artist who trains for unarmed, padded 1 on 1 combat, in an controlled environment.

Is it any wonder why no one is willing to put in at least 20 years training day in day out?

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
