My Friend

He sits at the top of the maple tree,

Catching the sunlight and darkness in his eyes,

Immersed in the scent of the glorious sun.

What is it that his eyes see,

When he looks out into the amorphous depths of the heavens?

I yearn to know,

To ask him,

"How is it that you see the world?"

His face is incomprehensible,

Yet serene, the gaze of a hawk,

Yearning.

I’ve always been yearning for something, I tell him --

Always.

Yes, always.

I let my words curl at the tip of my tongue,

Windswept by the wintry weather breeze that blows by.

I have been searching, I say.

Searching for what I yearns for.

I study his face,

The way the space between his eyes crease with profound thought,

The way his eyes shift into mine when he turns away from the heavens.

He's always been looking into the sky, into the souls of all.

But now he turns towards me,

Looking into my averse gaze, contemplating.

"I've been searching for you,"

The words surface from my mouth,

Soft, wistful, reflective.

"I've been searching for my friend.

The one who will fly with me,

Share my thoughts in the heavens."

My words are caught in my throat,

My hand balanced on the rough of the maple tree branch,

As he quietly asks:

"And?"

I can see my face shining in his abundant eyes,

My lips slowly curl into a smile,

"And I've found you."
