Sikh Representatives At The European Parliament In Brussels

I was reading the news in the artcile (http://www.sikhsangat.org/ssn/publish/Europe_21/Huge_Sikh_turnout_at_the_European_Parliament_in_Brussels.shtml)

And looking at the pics I cant see hardly one Sikh woman or sahajdhari/monah Sikh there. If these guys want to represent Sikhs they have to get real and include everyone, otherwise they will appear as fundamentalist men who are just pushing foward an agenda that doesnt include everyone in the community.

i jus saw the pics n there are some mone n bibiyaan.. the reason u don't see many is because these conference was for the Representatives of sikhi in each respective nation in europe.. its not jus for average people.. its for the representatives.. i would highly doubt any mone would be representatives of sikhi n iunno why bibiyaan aren't but men usually do it styll, its not that they aren't allowed but they choose not to step up, but there was one bibi with her kid in the pic so dun doubt errytin .. keep an open mind about things man, u kids get too caught up in trying to find something wrong in every little thing

A reply by "JagtarSinghKhalsa" made on the Sikh_News_Discussion Egroup regarding the same subject:

Requests were made on radio and TV that we need to ensure more women and youngsters attend the lobby. Last year on 31 May 2006 there were about 2 or 3 women out of 150 and about 10-15 youngsters.

Of the 250 or so present there were only 7 or 8 women - will get somone to check the photos and send them through. Neena Gill MEP thought one of the dastaar wearing Sikh women was a man!

This year there were 6 or 7 children under 10 years of age, around 10 teenagers and another 20-30 who were in their twenties and could be described as young.

In terms of women this is just not good enough but given the increased numbers and more young Sikhs this represents progress. We all have much more to do to ensure gender balance at such events and also need to encourage youngsters to attend.
