Former India test cricketer Maninder Singh faces drugs charges in Delhi after being arrested with 1.5 grams of cocaine, police say. Police raided Mr Singh's flat in the city on Tuesday and seized the cocaine, police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said. They say that another cricketer, Sayyam Siddique, was also arrested for possessing drugs during the raid. Both were arrested under the 1985 Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, Mr Bhagat said.

'Personal use'

Mr Singh admitted in a preliminary court hearing on Wednesday that he had used cocaine for 15 years. He was granted bail in exchange for paying 50,000 rupees (about $1,200). Police say they are now investigating whether Mr Singh kept the cocaine for his personal use or was involved in dealing.

Correspondents say that drug trafficking in India is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, while consumption of illegal drugs has a maximum penalty of two years in prison.

Singh, a left-arm spinner, played 35 tests for India in the 1980s, along with 59 limited-overs internationals. He is currently a radio and television cricket commentator.

They who call themselves Sikhs and then act like this should have the title of 'Singh' taken away - it's a title, not a name!

Waheguru ji ka khalsa

Waheguru ji kee Fateh

Sadh Sangat ji , i strongly agree with you , what i was thinking for the last couple of days that Akaal Takhat must also take a strong stand about all these people who are doing KURATE, she should not be treated part of khalsa panth even they should not be allowed to call themselves as SIKH and even Singh must be removed from thier name , even all these people must made realised that if you doint carry the surname of your forfathers then its as equllant to children of prostitutes as their kids are also not sure of their own father name,

The problem with your reply and suggestion is that this would cause a "slippery slope" if Akal Takht or another body of Sikhs attempted to take away "Singh" from someones name, and/or excommunicate him from the Panth. Because, eventually this same train of thought would go into much smaller issues that various panthic factions disagree over. Some would be saying if you don't believe in the whole Dasam Granth, than you are no child of Guru Gobind, and hence can not have Singh.

People would be trying to strip the name "Singh" from everyone they can.

This guy used cocaine for personal use, why does that harm you so much? Does it make sikhs look bad? I doubt it, its ONE person, who is a non-issue. He was a retired celebrity, not the leader of current Sikhs.

We all know the Khalsa during Guru Gobinds time used opium during war. rolleyes.gif
