all sikhs did NOT have turbans and were NOT all amritdharis before the british came. the british in fact made more sikhs amritdharis by rewarding them with army positions and the landholdings that came with such army positions. i suggest you read some history books.

the akalis started the morcha in 1973 after badal lost power in 1971 and the anandpur sahib resolution was passed in 1973. it faded until badal lost again in (1977-) 1980. between 1980 and 1982 it was pretty rubbish. then sant ji overtook it and it became popular. that is my understanding.
