The same torture teh Congress gov'ts said were false allegations. or the torture which the congress party saod was necesssary to fight militancy? well it turns out that to fight corruption, the congress party wants better treatment. “Please ask them (police) to hang me or give me death. I can’t tolerate more torture.” pleaded B.I.S. Chahal during a hearing in the attempt to murder and land grab cases in a local court, which sent him to judicial custody till June 27, in central jail here today. He said death was better than the humiliation.

Chahal alleged his legs were pulled apart, besides giving electric shocks to his private parts by officials of the Vigilance Bureau. He added that SSP (Vigilance) Kanwarjit Singh Sandhu, and SP Surjit Singh Garewal tortured him, while he was slapped by an ASI and his hair pulled. However, Sandhu refuted the allegations.

Former Congress MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa today suffered injuries on his forehead, allegedly due to “torture” in police custody.

However, the police booked Dimpa under Section 309 (FIR no. 127) of the IPC on the charge of attempt to suicide. District police chief, Amritsar (rural), Iqbal Singh, however, claimed that Dimpa tried to commit suicide by hitting his forehead against the wall of the barracks at the Beas police station at about 1.30 pm.

On the other hand, Rajinder Singh Tapiala, counsel of Dimpa, alleged that his client was taken from the Beas police station to the Kathunangal police station where he was tortured in the presence of senior police officers.

A senior police officer, on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Dimpa was taken to some unknown place.

Tapiala said he had gone to the Beas police station on a court order to meet Dimpa at 3 pm, but he was not allowed to meet him. Tapiala said his client told him that he was tortured by the police and had not been given food since 8 pm yesterday.

Even he was not allowed to sleep throughout the night. Dimpa also told his counsel that policemen tried to remove his clothes in the presence of senior officers.

However, senior police officers refuted the charges of Dimpa.

Report says he was tortured

The medical examination of Dimpa conducted on Friday evening said he had sustained 13 injuries on different parts of the body and the nature of wounds proved that he was “tortured”.

Lakhwinder Singh Chahal, senior medical officer, Baba Bakala, said all injuries appeared to have been inflicted with blunt weapons and don’t appear to be self-inflicted. Even the injury on his forehead, which the police yesterday claimed was sustained by Dimpa when he tried to commit suicide, was also not self-inflicted in nature. “It was on the forehead and not on the head,” said Chahal.

“The injuries are on the arms, legs, buttocks and head. These prove that Dimpa was tortured as so many injuries cannot be due to banging one’s head against the wall. The report of the medical examination has been handed over to the police,” he said.

Giving a last warning to the Badal government, the leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, today said that her party workers would come out in the streets if police repression and excesses were not stopped against them immediately.

“We will not allow the state Assembly to function during the coming budget session, which begins on June 18, if the Badal government does not withdraw the false cases registered against Congress activists,” she said. “Instead of going to the Assembly, we would prefer to gherao police stations,” she said while talking to The Tribune today on the phone.

Referring to the case of former Congress MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa, Bhattal said Badal had failed to check police excesses on senior Congress leaders. “Dimpa was treated in a barbaric manner,” she said. “On the one hand, Jasbir Singh was tortured in police custody and, on the other hand, a case of suicide had been registered against him,” she said.

“We have solid proof to confront the Badal government on police excesses,” she said. Many Dalits have been killed in the past few days. “We have a list of all such cases and I have visited the families of Dalits who had suffered at the hands of the police at the behest of the state government,” she said.

Dimpa led attack, Rajan fired AK-47: SAD

A video, reportedly shot by a mediaperson, shows the Congress MLA from Beas, Mr Jasbir Singh Dimpa, guiding the attack on Akali workers and his younger brother, Mr Harpinder Singh Rajan, a transporter, loading and firing from the prohibited AK- 47 assault rifle in front of the election office of the Congress candidate at Beas yesterday.

The video was played in presence of Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal, general secretary, Shiromani Akali Dal, Mr Navjot Singh Sidhu, BJP's Lok Sabha candidate, and Mr Manjinder Singh Kang, Akali candidate from Beas.

In a signed statement, Mr Harpinder Singh Rajan, younger brother of Mr Dimpa, said the video clip was 'doctored '.

The video clipping also shows the official gunmen the Congress leaders firing rounds. The assault rifle is shown being used by Mr Balkar Singh and Mr Chattar Singh, Chairman, and Vice-Chairman of the Block Samiti, respectively.

Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal served a 15-hour ultimatum to the state government to arrest Mr Dimpa and his younger brothers-Mr Harmanbir Singh Gill, SP (Traffic), Chandigarh, and Mr Harpinder Singh Rajan. The latter was also involved in an armed attack in Rajasansi last year. Mr Badal said he would go to the office of the SSP, Majitha, at 9 am tomorrow if the arrests were not made by that time .

He sought deployment of paramilitary forces in all over the state to ensure free and fair election. He, however, said Youth Akali workers would be deployed in all Assembly segments.

He demanded Z Plus security for Mr Kang who, he said, faced a threat to his life from the 'Dimpa brothers'. Mr Badal said action must be taken against police officers instrumental in registration of a 'false FIR' against Mr Kang on charges of kidnapping the woman sarpanch of Baba Bakala.

The SAD candidate, Mr Kang alleged that three workers of his party were still missing and he believed that they had been killed and their bodies taken away to ‘eliminate’ evidence.
