Man enters bank, demands ticket to India

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An East Indian man surrendered to a SWAT team hours after he walked into an Orlando bank with a briefcase and demanded a plane ticket to India, prompting officers to evacuate the business.

Investigators said bank workers inside the Wachovia Bank on Sand Lake Road in Orlando noticed a man police identified as Nirvair Singh, 31, acting suspiciously and called 911 on Tuesday, FLORIDA TODAY news partner WKMG Local 6 reported.

When officers arrived, the man refused to leave the bank and said "he wanted to go to India," Orange County sheriff's representative Jim Solomons said.

Officers said the man was carrying a briefcase and caused a disturbance.

A bank worker who flagged down a passing police officer said the man sat in a chair and did not move after entering the building. Witnesses said they saw the man praying inside the bank.

A SWAT team took the man into custody after a two-hour standoff.

There were no injuries in connection with the standoff.

A lane of traffic near Orange Blossom Trail and Sand Lake was closed over the incident. Roads were reopened to traffic Tuesday afternoon.

wat is that about? going into a bank and asking for ticket to india? he could have atleast asked for money and then would have had enough money to buy a couple of tickets to india. (for family and stuff you know)

He probably knew he would get arrested by making such a stupid request at a bank that they would deport him anyway and he would get his trip back to the India without spending a dime. However, now he would be looking at doing some hard time in prison.

Not so funny. He refused to come out of the bank, and then refused to cooperate outside the bank. People are questioning the level of force that was used, and I'm fairly sure that the turban said "terrorist" to the police involved.

Here is a fellow sikh, who knowingly or unknowingly did this and all we can do is make wise cracks. Who knows how much stress he was under when he was living in US. whether he had a job or not, whether he had any money or not. <_<

I am sure that singh is probably not fit mentally or maybe under lots of pressure as balait mentioned.

If someone knew the contact of this singh.. I am willing to buy him the ticket back to India right away. We need to help such ppl. Gurdwaraay around North america need to be inter-connected with each other and help such needy ppls.
