[The Khalsa Fauj]

Before we translate the shabad, we have to understand what Guru Sahib says about nar (human) and pas (animal). Shabads are given and translated below.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਰੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1140}

Naam Binaa Nar Kahee Na Laykhai || 2 || {Page 1140}

Without the name of the Lord (Satnaam), a human is not of any use. 2. (Meaning that a person will never benefit the society without following truth).

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪਾ ਕੂੜੇ ਸਭੇ ਸਾਕ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਸੁ ਨਾਪਾਕ ॥੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 47}

Maatt Pettaa Sutt Bundhapaa Koorray Sabhay Saak || Jin Keettaa Tishe Naa Jaannee Manmukh Pas Napaak || 2 || {Page 47}

Mother, father, son and spouse are all temporary relationships. The one who has made him is unknown to the impure, self-willed, animal mind person. (What this Shabad means is that a person who just tries to please his own only and doesn’t help others is like an animal because animals don’t know the Gurmat way of life.)

ਸਾਚ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਝੂਠਹ ਲਾਗਿਓ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਓ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ਉਦਰ ਨਿਜ ਪੋਖਿਓ ਪਸੁ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਸੋਇਓ ॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 633}

Saach Shaad Kai Jhootah Laageo Janam Aakaarath Khoayeo || Kar Parpunch Oudar Nijj Pokheo Pas Kee Neaaee Soeo || 1 || {Page 633}

Leaving the true one and clinging to falsehood, you have wasted your life in materials. Showing tricks and performing hypocrisy, you have fed yourself and have been sleeping like an animal. 1. (Meaning is that just as animals are careless and don’t know bandgee, a person who doesn’t follow truth is also the same way.)

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਨੈ ਸੁ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਬੰਦਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1349-1350}

One who understands the order of the Lord and loves the Lord is the only one who can be called a human of God. 3.

Gond is the raag to be used to sing this Shabad. When righteousness (word is naroo and not nar so it means righteousness) dies, a person becomes useless. (How? When a person’s moral character dies, a person becomes corrupt and causes harm to others thus becomes useless). When the beastly instinct (meaning desire for materials becomes extinct), person becomes useful and becomes beneficial for many reasons. Dss means many. 1. What do I know of the results of my actions? Oh wise! What do I know? 1. Pause. When the thought of bones burning like a heap of woods comes; when the thought of hair burning like a bundle of grass comes. 2. Then you will wake up and realize. However, by that time it will be too late as death will be right in your face. 3. 2.

(Message of the shabad is not to waste time fulfilling materialistic desires. Remember Waheguru all the time and get rid of anti-Gurmat content from inside and outside).

Animals aren't careless, in fact they're probably more efficient than us especially in the wild. (Yes lotls has been watching too much Animal Planet.) But the main point is that animals live only to survive/reproduce. If we don't realise the Truth then there is little more meaning to our own lives as humans.
