Community celebrates Britain’s Sikh heritage

A CELEBRATION has been held to mark the past 50 years of Sikh heritage in Britain.

On February 2, British Sikhs: Past, Present and Future was held at Woodville Halls, Windmill Street, Gravesend.

The free event showcased a photographic exhibition, including material from the V&A museum in central London.

Musicians performed traditional Sikh music and talks were given by speakers, including Gravesham MP Adam Holloway.

Young professional British Sikhs also talked about their experiences.

The event was organised by the North West Kent Racial Equality Council and the Siri Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara, Gravesend.

Racial equality council assistant director Gurvinder Sander said: "We only had seating for 510 people.

"I think we could have doubled that as there was so much demand.

"We had a very good range of people from other faiths.

"It shows a strong community in Gravesend."
