Banning Pornography - Why Is No One Doing Anything About It

I would like to find out and just discuss if there are any ways of banning pornography or restricting its access efficiently.

I got into the whole kaam thing at a very early age and it was due to silly things like shopkeepers selling me beyond my age stuff and videos from friends brothers etc. And the main most dangerous one was of course the internet. I mean, no one can fully be protected in terms of getting this stuff from friends who’s brothers or whatever are in possession of this stuff. But the shopkeeper thing and the internet (the main one) have to be controlled.

What the EDIT is the government doing about this. For EDIT sake. Its like some sort of higher power is purposely trying to corrupt young minds and no ones doing anything to stop it. The internet and porn has been a nightmare throughout high school up till now. Why is this poison available so easily on the net people?

I’ve been completely scolded by this pornography probably due to being exposed to it at such a young age. Whats the EDIT point of making it 18 years or over if a kid as young as 10 can access this EDIT?

In effect, I’ve been sexually abused by this whole thing. And yes it is sexual abuse. Sorry to those people who have been physically abused but this is sexual abuse too. It stole away a kids innocence, corrupted and perverted his mind and he’s suffering unimaginably right now. This EDIT poison should be kept away from young eyes. Its not all my fault damn it. It’s the governments responsibility and those in charge to do something about it. I’m 23. I’m crying while I write this. I’m in hell for gods sake. And theres many like me.

well no body forced you to look at porn......looks like you are getting angry over your weakness (and im not sayin im not weak etc) BUT now that you have stopped theres no need to get angry.....yes its a shame that young people look at that stuff BUT its the parents who need to have more control over what their children view!............i dont think you can go as far as sexual abuse BUT im no expert on that subject.......i think you may need to see a professional because u have some issues that wont be solved by a couple of posts from me or anyone else.......i hope u get "out of hell" soon.

You can't change the past, so don't worry about it .Just do Ardas for the future and don't make the same mistakes again.

Banning anything doesn't stop it. People always find ways to get around bans. Like someone said, nobody forced you to go buy magazines etc.

Gurbani, Sewa and Simran will help clean your mind and stop it from going back to those thoughts. Sewa especially - try it see!

Thanks for replying

Of course no one forced me to look at it. And yeah, I was and still am (a bit stronger now) as weak as hell. I have no problem with admitting that. Probably due to seeds of lust planted in previous lives. But my point is that this stuff should just not be available to such young eyes! You seem to have missed that. If it were not available, its damage would have been much less I believe.

And I would go as far as terming it sexual abuse. I want to write a book on this because it is so profound. Listen, it is the responsibility of those people in power to control what the citizens can watch or not watch in accordance with what is morally right. Now how the hell is making access to such material easy for a minor morally right. I have not been sexually abused by a person but I have been sexually abused by the failure of any authority to do anything about it. Any intellectual will see that I’m right. All children under age who are watching this stuff are being abused by the system – its complete neglect of this matter.

Children need to be protected from this stuff.

This is not about my problem. But I want to see how i and others can help our future generations by bringing this issue into the mainstream

If anybody is going to post more replies of saying how it’s my fault, please don’t. It’s making me feel worse. I am not saying that none of this is down to me. I guess only people who have been in this mess can see where I am coming from. There is even a website. Victomsofpornography. I (the former addict) am one of the victims. The story is not as black and white to the point where you can say you should not have looked at the stuff.

I was a kid at the time man. Kids will try things which they should not, whether its drugs, porn or whatever. But once you’re hooked, then you’re in problems.

This is the same thing as trying to get drugs off our street. Pornography is a drug. Children in school are going to use drugs for whatever reason and by saying no one made you use the drugs, does not help anything. It does not mean that we should not try to reduce their access to drugs. By not getting onto the drugs, they would not have to suffer the consequences, and we prevent them from using drugs by cutting out drugs altogether.

There are organisations which agree with my mode of thinking. Perhaps I ought to approach them.

And please don’t blame my parents. My parents are the best and are properly attuned to gursikhi. No matter how hard the parents try, kids will still get access unless there are properly enforced barriers by those in power (content on tv, access to websties etc).

I still appreciate any replies

Matheen, thank you for your advice. Yeah I have started seva.

Thanks

I can completely understand the sexual abuse thing. Basically about 2 weeks ago I left my phone on the bus. I tried calling it but no one answered :) After trying about 10 times a man answered and he wanted me to go and meet him. I was abit scared cos I am a girl and he seemed to be filrty but it was a public place and I was desperate to get my phone back so I went.

When I go to meet him there were about 4 of his guy friends with him. They were actually really nice and friendly. However I did not stay to chat. I took my phone, thanked him and did not look back.

I then checked to see if he had made any international calls but there were none other than him phoning RANDOM people in my phone contacts. It was abit weird cos U wud call home, mom or dad but I just thought nothing of that and was happy to be safe and have my mobile back.

Then just last week I was downloading pictures off my mobile and I noticed there was also a video. I had never seen it before. I actually looked at it and I was very confused cos I didn't understand what was happening or what it was about.

It was a video of MOD EDIT

I feel so disgusted, I feel like I have been abused....but only a mild form. I find it hard to let go of what I saw. I actually feel like washing my phone but that's stupid. I deleted the video but I still have the memory and the moment of my horror will be with me forever. I cannot believe I had to go through that. Also those men must have been so gundey....what a thing to do...I dunno if I shud call them decent for returning my phone or indecent people....

No where near enough is being done to protect kids from this plague.

I don't think we can expect Government to do much as porn business is generating a lot of money. Just in US, it generated US $13 billion in 2006!!! It basically comes down to parents being extremely cautious of what their kids do online. Also, I think educating kids may be helpful. But I'm not a parent, so I really shouldn't be saying how one should raise their kids :)

Maskeen Ji's words come to mind, he said that out of all mammals, humans have chosen to keep the act of procreation hidden from society. Animals procreate out in the open, humans don't. So witnessing the act has detrimental consequences to an individual's psyche, especially that of a child.

the truth is just because me or u or person x doesnt think something is right, doesnt mean it should be banned

it doesnt only apply to porn, but to alcahol, to w.e

porn is not some evil being, and its not addictiive

it is the nautral drive of kaam we have in uis tha is hard to escape, and if we cud escape kaam so easily then wed be amazing

its not tha watching porn is a sin, thas not wat w ebelive

but by engrossing the mind in the panj dooths, sexual desire being one of them, by conenctrating on these we will forget remebering god

now im not saying watching porn doesnt mean u forget god, but it will keep ure mind focused on THIS reality, and it gets harder to mediate, it deifntley hurts ure bhagthi

ure mind cannot sit still with kaam in it

but we arnt chrisitians, where they say that watching porn and masturbation, or w.e is a sin itself

i dunt think we shuid sopread this mesage as sikhis

guru je said kaam is wat is we shud be escaping

and the reason is not just because kaam is a sin or w.e, but because it hurts our meditation and it hurts our ability to remeber god, and thas the worst fate that can fall on someone

guru jes helping us on our path, since they are our guru

they teach us wat is good for meditation, and wat is not

but porn shud be careful to who its exposed to, it might mess up the brin of a little kid, but i aint no doctor

Porn is not evil? What the hell is it then my friend. Good? Of course it is evil. In a perfect world, there would be no pornography.

And I don’t agree with that whole politically correct mumbo jumbo about just because some people believe something should be banned but some don’t, means that nothing should be done about it. Some might say they are taking away there right to watch the stuff but it is downright evil and corrupt. People who are not in favour of bans such as this are not perfect. Therefore they are not right in terms of saying it takes away their rights of freedom or whatever. If they are not negatively affected by it now, they will be in the future, possibly their next lives.

We as Sikhs should be doing more than Christians are doing in fact in regard to this matter. Pornography is a massive sin and an evil plague. In fact, we recognise lust as one of the main evils, so then how comes you don’t agree with pornography being evil man?

And it is downright addictive. In fact, some researchers have concluded that internet pornography is more addicitve than drugs such as heroin. Chemicals are released in the brain when watching this stuff and it is more long lasting because the images stay in your mind forever.

I don't think it can be banned but i'm talking about restricting its access on the internet big time. Some major reforms are needed. For example, all these sites should be requried by law to have some sort of system where it is impossible for a minor to access them. If they don't comply then they should be prosecuted. And those file sharing networks and programs need to be controlled somehow. I mean, there must be a way. And also adult channels on cable television should be restricted much more and adult movies on regular channels need to be taken off air. These are the main mediums whereby one gets infected with this stuff. I know.
