Question From A Muslim Friend Of Mine

Recommended Posts

Guru Nanak Dev jee along with the other gurus came into this world for the following reason:

suxI pukwr dwqwr pRB gur nwnk jg mwihM pTwXw]

The benefactor Lord listened to the cries (of humanity) and sent guru Nanak dev jee to this world. (Bhai Gurdas jee)

The Invaders who were Muslims had entered the lands of India and murdered, looted and forced their religion on others. According to Guru Gobind Singh jee maharaj in the bachittar natak, Hinduism and Islam had taken away the sole centre of religion, which is worshipping God, rather in these religions the names of the prophets rather than God were shown preferance. So Guru Nanak Dev jee sang gurbani (the divine revelation of the Lord) and praised God as represented in Mool mantar at the start of the Guru Granth Sahib jee.

Hindus not only had stopped worshipping god, (by dividing his attributes into manfiestations) but they also divided humanity into a class system:

cwrY pYr DrMm dy cwr vrn iek vrn krwXw]

Dharma was now established on its four feet and all the four castes (through fraternal feeling) were converted into one caste (of humanity). (Bhai Gurdas jee)

These are just some of the reasons why Guru Nanak DEv jee came to this world and how social system along with religious systems had failed the devotee. The principles which Guru Nanak Dev jee stood for were not new, guru Nanak Dev jee simply spoke the truth, truth has always existed, as represented by the bani of the bhagats, whos bani supports the principles of the gurus

People who follow the truth such as Bhagat Kabir jee, Bhagat Nam DEv jee, Bhagat Farid jee all reached God, even though they came before the times of Guru Nanak Dev, they represented the same ideology. Remembering or meditating on the Lords name has been given as the highest religion by the Sikh Gurus (notice that a specific religion is not named, the purpose of life is not limited to labels:

sB qy aUqm iehu krmu ] This is the most exalted deed.

sgl Drm mih sRyst Drmu]Of all faiths, this is the most sublime and excellent faith.

hir ismrin qyrw hoie auDwru ]Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, you shall be saved.

jnm jnm kw auqrY Bwru ]3]You shall be rid of the burden of countless incarnations. ||3||

The Guru however has given his Sikhs a code of conduct, the code is distinct from other religions. Rather than just worshipping god or looking after those of the faith (as many religions only look out for each other), a Sikh lives to serve humanity. This makes a Sikh unique. In the case of a Sikh, he must follow his guru, its not simply possible as saying I remember the Lord therefore I can reach God. Dharam is a path, walking on no path will lead you no where and all you will do is get lost. Sikhs cannot use this as an excuse to not follow Sikhi.

Guru Nanak Dev jes bani reminds us of the essentials to reach God (as noted in this post). There are many figures in the Sikh history such as Baba budhan Shah, baba Bikhan Shah, Mian Mir etc, the gurus never told them to change faith, however it is normally accepted in Sikhism that these people had reached God.

Sorry for mistakes I have made. This is not an easy topic to understand and my knowledge is limited, i have only said what I understand at this moment in time, through discussing we can learn more.

but there followers follow them, meditate on them, metion them. not GOD

Now, now, I would say that isn't true at all. How could you say that about every single follower of those religions on this planet? Have you ever been to a church or a mosque or a temple?! The importance of God is stressed very much. Jesus, Moses and Mohammed were all messengers of God and their followers follow the word of God through their teachings.

If you say "yeah" to someone, it means you are agreeing with them. I am confused now. Can you post a direct quote or link to something that makes you think otherwise?

my answer is there were many messengers of god but then mayb u might ask, why were they not as successful as nanak...thats wherer im confused now :gg:

So Jesus wasn't as successful as Guru Nanak and neither was Moses? What are you basing success on?

they say Jesus was muslim.

they're trained and geard up for questions and answers from the advise of well versed scholars, something which we are not.

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
