Number 2 would shout out that he has a white hat on because he can see that 3 infront of him has a black hat on, and he would know that if he also had a black hat on then 1 would have shouted out his colour. So 2 will realize that his must be different to 3.

I don't think i've explained it very well but I think thats right

yea, thats right. ur explaination is totally fine.

let me try to explain it better.

number 1 sees 2 hats of differnt colors in front of him, so he cant say for sure which hat he is wearing, becasue its a 50/50 chance he will get it right. number 2 knows that number 1 can see 2 hats. 1 being his own (number 2's) and the other being number 3's. and since number 1 is not shouting anything, that means that number 2's and number 3's hats are of 2 differnt colors. and since number 2 sees that number 3's hat is black, that means his hat has to be white, which explains why number 1 is not shouting anything. number 2 is first to shout his hat color, and number 3 would be second, becaues he knows that both number 1 and number 2 can see his hat color, and if number 2 shouted his hat being white, and since number 1 didnt say anything either, that means that number 3 also understands that number 2's hat and his own (number 3's) are of differnt colors. and since number 2 shouted white, then that means he would be the second one to shout, which would be black.

and now iam not sure who would shout 3rd. iam guess it would be white, becaues he's just going by the pattern maybe, but idk.

but the first person to shout his hat color is def. number 2. for sure.

Yes, No. 2

4 - cannot see anyone's hat

3 - cannot see anyone's hat

2 - can see that 3 is wearing a black hat

1 - can see 2 and 3's hat colors.

2 will know he is wearing a white hat, due to the following reason:

If 1 knew that 2 and 3 were wearing the same color hats -- he would have answered there and then, because there are only two hats of the same color, black and white. So if 2 and 3 had, say white -- he would have answered black, but he did not, because from the picture, WE can tell that 2 and 3 have different color hats.

2 knows he is wearing a white hat because if 1 saw that both 2 and 3 were wearing black hats, then he would have answered. But since 1 is silent, 2 knows that he must be wearing a white hat as he can see that 3 is wearing a black hat.

Edit: Just saw the thread's date -- lol -- it's been here for ages
