Beej Mantar In Sukhmani Sahib

While studying viyakaran I came across this panktee:

ਬੀਜ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਕੋ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

Many gianis interpret it as: ਬੀਜ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ (ਮੁੱਢ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ) ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਕੋ (ਨੂੰ) ਹੈ । (Everyone has the knowledge of beej mantar). But his translation is not correct because “Beej Mantar” is greatest mantra of all and it refers to Gurmantra which is only obtained from the true Guru. Hence, only those have gyan of beej mantar who have obtained it which means not everyone can have its knowledge. If we take this translation to be true then it also includes animals, bacteria and all other life forms. This again cannot be true because only through human life one can attain salvation which comes by doing Naam japp. If we apply viyakaran then the meanings fit perfectly with the next ones.

Word ਕੋ means ਲਈ instead of ਨੂੰ. This way the interpretation becomes:

ਬੀਜ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ (ਮੁੱਢ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ) ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਹੈ ।

If the correct translation was ਨੂੰ then there would’ve been ਕਉ instead of ਕੋ. Here is just one example in which word ਕਉ means ਨੂੰ

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਸੋ ਕਹੀਅਤ ਹੈ ਸੂਰਾ ॥

Then the next pankti says:

ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਮਹਿ ਜਪੈ ਕੋਊ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

ਚਾਰ ਵਰਨਾਂ (ਖਤ੍ਰੀ, ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ, ਸ਼ੂਦ, ਵੈਸ਼) ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਪ ਲਏ।

Because:

ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਸੂਦ ਵੈਸ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਕਉ ਸਾਝਾ ॥

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਜਪੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਗਤੀ (ਮੁਕਤੀ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।

Word ਜਪੈ is singular and it refers to any one person. If it was plural then it would’ve been ਜਪਹਿ.

ਕੋ sometimes also means ਕੋਈ but it does not mean ਨੂੰ. Remaining panktis are easier to understand.
