Sikh Group Honours Indira's Assassins

Twenty-four years after the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, a fringe Sikh group - Khalso Panchayat recently held a prayer meeting in the memory of the killers in Chandigarh.

Even the families of the assassins Beant Singh and Satwant Singh were felicitated.

"We all panthic organisations have joined hands to celebrate the martrydom day of Shaheed Beant Singh, Shaheed Satwant Singh, Shaheed Kehar Singh," Prof Rajinder Singh, Convener of the Khalso Panchayat said.

Following the prayer meeting, the Punjab government is facing a huge embarrasment and is on a defensive.

Harcharan Singh Bains, media adviser to the Punjab Chief Minister said, "Punjab saw some tragic days and people have strong views about that."

The prayer meeting was organised, even as the Central Government had directed the states to observe October 31 as the Sadhbahvna Divas across the country.

Despite the Centre's call, the Panthic organisations went ahead and honoured the killers of Indira gandhi for 'bringing glory' to the Sikh community and 'punishing' all those who hurt the Sikh community.

The Punjab government, on the other hand said that it was not mandatory for them to follow these directions in letter and spirit. This has obviously irked the Congress leaders.

Rajiner Kaul Bhattal, Punjab Congress leader said,"Punjab government's flip-flop on Sankalp divas is unfortunate. Indira Gandhi sacrificed her life for India."

Has anyone in india heard how they plan to commemorate indira witchs life next year? Im guessing there will be loads of documentories, big processions etc? Most will prob cud the singhs.

any details yet? and any plans in india to counter the false parchar as next year the govt is bound to try make singhs look as bad as possible.

the article above forgets to mention that the SGPC honours them each year. this year no different. they cannot play down the fact that the SGPC honours them too.

Even as the Congress party organised a Sankalp Diwas function to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi, the head priest of the Golden Temple, Giani Dharam Singh, paid rich tributes to her assassins here today.

Addressing a large gathering at the bhog of Beant Singh, one of the killers of the former Prime Minister, in the Golden Temple complex, the head priest said history was a witness that those who had dared to attack the Golden Temple would meet a similar fate. He said Sikhs were always ready to make supreme sacrifices to save the honour of the Panth. He said the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) had organised the ceremony to recall the sacrifices made by them.

Besides priests Granthi Mal Singh and Giani Jagtar Singh, SGPC secretaries Harbeant Singh and Ranvir Singh, additional secretaries Major Singh and Gurdarshan Singh, deputy secretary Tarlochan Singh, Angrez Singh, Dilbagh Singh and Harbhajan Singh Manawa, chief gurdwara inspector Sukhdev Singh Bhura Kohna, in charge and assistant in charge of the Publicity Department Ram Singh and Iqbal Singh Mukhi, accountant Harinderpal Singh, members of the Dharam Prachar Committee, staff of the SGPC and hundreds of devotees were among those present on the occasion.
